They were not in any of the larger cities but located more in the countryside. They were a more well-to-do family of Hui descent. They were practicing Muslims and made their money mostly from agriculture. They owned land that they leased out for others to cultivate and reaped the rewards from the produce. Including the violence that was occurring with foreign forces as well as the issues, the country itself was facing because of the onslaught of opium in the market. As a whole, my family was working to stay somewhat out of the spotlight. We had ended up losing some of our land and wealth but continued to work and create a subsistence to live on. We are considered a minority and even though we did not support the Qing dynasty we did not see the reason for such violence during the rebellion. We saw the problems that the country was facing because of the influence of the west and because of the unrest within the government. In general we had become more trade oriented and thus say the way that interactions with foreigners could help but the way that the government was dealing with the interactions needed to be changed. They were able to see how the imperial pressures of Japan was hurting the country. The influx of communism and the way that the people were working to expel the Japanese forces in comparison to the nationalist who were just causing conflict really appealed to my family. Becaues of the younger generation that was working for reform in the early 1900s their ideas helped to pertain to the beliefs of the communists and the ideals that they had as a revolutionist group.
