Random International’s Rain Room (2012) is an immersive environment of perpetually falling water that pauses wherever a human body is detected. The installation offers visitors an opportunity to experience what is seemingly impossible: the ability to control rain. Rain Room presents a respite from everyday life and an opportunity for sensory reflection within a responsive relationship.

Rain Room allows visitors to the installation to walk through a downpour without getting wet. The exhibition uses motion sensors to encourage user engage on the site with their performance. 

The sensor devices are placed on the walls and ceilings in a room, different motions create different soundscape. The sounds changed according to the movement of people.

Motions transformed by the device to create sounds, it changed its composition depends on the movement created.

The room should be dark with a few light balls around. People sensor the space by hearing different tones of the music, if people move fast, it will trigger the sound volume to go higher. 

Some part of the music sounds fearful, I want everyone who’s engaging with this exhibition to experience a sense of untouchable but also sensible a site by listening to music. This is an immersive experience with both fear and unknown in it. I want people to feel a space without touching, or seeing it. 


Final concept / intended user experience

The installation is interactive in this way. When people clap their hands, the music comes out, when the music comes out, it triggers the sensor of the light. 

For this installation to work properly, we would need this type of space, people with headphones, walk into each room and trigger sounds by clapping their hands, then the coloured light of the room is triggered by the microphone, it changes depending on the random sounds it plays. 

The exhibition uses sounds and colours to encourage users to engage on the site with their performance. What if sound can be seen through colour?

Inspired by the Rain Room, an exploration of immersive experience, people would not get wet on a rainy site. It is a hidden way of interacting with the rain. However, in the concept of 'what if sounds can be seen', my project tends to create an experience of interacting with space through sounds and lighting.

This course has provided a good understanding of me how sounds can affect how people feel and experience a space.
As a designer, it does provide a really notice for me to understand sound effects. 

For the future, I think understanding sound installation is what this course has provided me. And it does open a very different perspective and exploration for me in the future.
