Hello , my name is Mary Cohen, I was a Rosie the Riveter during World War II. I have lived a very important and impactful life. I have given inspiration to many women during the war. People were struggling drastically during the war due to the conditions they had to live in. Their husbands and older sons that we're in the war were’ going to be away for a while, most of the soldiers in the war were being killed. These women had many things they had to persevere through. They did not just go get food, They worked for it and they had to have ration tickets for their goods. These woman and I have worked very hard and have done many important jobs during the war. Someone had to build all of the ships, tanks, and weapons for the men in the war. If we were not part of the war we would not be able to fight and defend ourselves. These jobs that we had were in terrible conditions, we work with hard tools and a small amount of work space. There were tools, but not what you have today. We worked long, long hours to make small amounts of money. You can't even imagine the terrible terrible conditions of the jobs that we had to do. We had to build tanks, weapons, and airplanes by ourselves when the men were at war. When the men came back they wanted to have their jobs back. Some of the women gave up their jobs for the men. Others like myself wanted to keep our jobs. We felt it was our right to work. Today you are lucky because you get the opportunity to complete many of my jobs as a women living on the home front did.

During the war, we had to shop with our ration tickets and money to buy the goods we needed. We would have to use these ration cards wisely and responsibly because if we lost them we could not get the goods that they needed. I had to work very hard to earn money to buy these goods. We worked hard and took our amount of food for granted. The way you use a ration book is you look at the symbol that is on your booklet, for example the (insert) today you will get the opportunity to do one responsibility that I have which is to take care of your family. You have to use the money given in your envelope and your ration books to go shopping. You each with have a recipe to fill out, you will learn how to persevere through one problem at the home front. Any questions ? (They respond) ok you may begin have fun!!!

Conclusion

The shopping that you did was mostly done by the mother of the family. The men were at war and the kids were either at work or gardening for their family,so it was left to us to do the rationing and shopping. This was one responsibility of women on the home front. Feeding our families was a very stressful responsibility as you all have got the opportunity to shop with ration cards. Can anyone tell me your view on your shopping experience? (they answer) (ask 2 people) This was just one responsibility we had as women on the home front!

There was one way we got food without using our ration, this was gardening. Have any of you grown a garden? (They answer) ok great! This was one way to get away from using ration. It still cost money because you had to get plants. We would grow gardens to help get more goods for our family. This was very popular in the United States.

During the war you all know when you were shopping there was very few amounts of goods you could buy this was all a major issue for all of you right? (They answer) Can you explain the issues and problems you faced when shopping (have them explain 1 minute) because there were very few goods, some people would garden to get more goods. These gardens were called victory gardens, there were many things they grew the most popular was onion, tomatoes, peppers. Many people would start their victory garden in their backyards and if they don’t have space in their backyard then they would grow a small garden in there window box. Victory gardens played an impact on many homes. There were even people in the United States who grew victory gardens. There was more than 20,000,000 victory gardens planted across the United States. Today you will portray a citizen of America trying to live off of you ration and you are still short on goods. You, in return start a Victory Garden to get some goods and save some money. You will start with a small space because there was only a small amount of land open for you to garden. You will first start with grabbing you plant then you will start to dig a hole in the ground to place your plant. Then you will set your plant in the hole, after you can start using the dirt you digged up you will us that to cover the plants roots. (Show example 2 minutes) (Have them finish it (4 minutes)

Conclusion:

Now that you have portrayed the responsibility of a woman using rations and a child planting a victory garden. This was a typical job for a younger child. They got this job because the men were at war, and the women were busy taking over the men's jobs. The women had to work long hours. They did not have time to build a victory garden and care for it. They were already busy caring for their family, taking care of their house, and doing the job that they took over when the men left. These women lived a very stressful and hard life that they had to persevere through. Ration tickets were not enough to feed their own family. Victory gardens were a good way to get more food and help feed your family. Overall, victory gardens were a great way to get more goods for a smaller space. Some people lived in apartments so they had little spots in there window sill to plant some plants. Others would plant them in their backyards. Now we will be moving on to the letters that were written from the home front families to the family members in war.

I and many other women had a lack of goods because most of the goods were being used to feed the soldiers. The soldiers were the first priority because they were fighting to protect us citizens and women. We were put on ration tickets which is a way to give each citizen at home a fair amount of food to eat. We would use the ration plus money to by the good, and they were not cheap to buy during the war because of high inflation. It was hard to get food for us and our families.

You have seen the struggles we faced and how we worked together to preserve through them. We have worked together like women including me on the home front. We have shopped with ration tickets, read a newspaper interview from a Rosie the Riveter, planted a victory garden, and read letter from the home front. If there is one thing that I want all of you to remember is that when you are struggling or giving up you have to stay strong and persevere through your hard times. Don’t just give up on something you believe in. Thank you for letting me come, goodbye.
