It was founded by a joint-stock company (Virginia Company), who risked losing all of the investors money to create this place for others to be able to live and prosper in.
In the beginning, Jamestown settlers suffered due to dysentery and malaria because of their location (swampy forest). The men weren't accustomed to hard work or would only look for gold causing them to trade with American Indians; however they had a dispute and the natives seized trade with them and causing a starvation.

They looked into getting permanent workers that they would never have to pay. Black Africans became indentured servants and were allowed to leave after their time was up.
