In the book Jonas describes that the apple changed for a split second but then went back to normal. The apple relates to Jonas becoming 12 because of his new beginning. When Jonas becomes 12 he will get assigned a job. This will be considered a new beginning because when onas gets this job it will take over his whole life. A rule that is harsher for adults than children is that every morning they have to take pills. These pills keep away the ¨stirrings¨ since it is an adult condition. This is because it holds thousands of books while all the other houses only have two. Another thing is in the Receiver's house is the speaker. Every house has this however the Receiver's house has a button to turn it off. The Receiver's house  has these differences because they need privacy. They need this because no one has this ability to do what the Receiver and Jonas can. The new Receiver has to take off their clothes and lay on the bed, as he relaxes and closes his eyes. After the new Receiver does this the Giver places his hand on Jonas' back and somehow, which the Givers calls honor he is able to give Jonas a dream like thing so he can see and experience a certain memory. The first memory that Jonas receives is snow. So, it means that Jonas never knew there were other communities, and that there was a past and a future. When the Giver tells him these things it confuses him as to why he was told a lie. This is not a good way to live because it never talks about others, the past, or the future. Today, we learn about the past in History, also know as social studies. We also learn throughout school that their are different traditions, and celebrations depending on the country. Readers can make an inference from the book that the citizens are always watched and never have privacy. They aren't allowed to have locks or able to shut off their speaker. They are always being watched. So, when the Giver locks the door and shuts off the speaker it occurs to be wrong and weird to Jonas. It is symbolic to the book because is shows the importance of the Giver aka the old Receiver. The Giver is so important because it is the person who has to teach the new Receiver and give him memories. Without him there would be no way to pass on the memories the the new Receiver. Not only does it show the importance of the Givers job but also the importance of Jonas's job.
