When teaching quadratic functions (finding parameters by simultaneous equations and also by quadratic regression), show students how to import an image into Desmos, select a suitable alignment and then select points to be able to use quadratic regression in GDC.

Students collect data they believe is normally distributed and explore whether it is normally distributed using the Chi-square goodness of fit test and other math. They develop their understanding of the math while they also get practice using online graphing tools and spreadsheets.

Modelling with Desmos

To familiarise students with using Desmos, I have them take a picture of a building in the city that has a curved element to its structure. I will then have them insert the picture into desmos so that it aligns nicely with the axes, identify points points along the curved structure, and then try to create a function that models this curve using their GDC.

I get students to compete in teams for 4-5 different candy-centric events. Then with all the data results gathered from each event (with different means and different standard deviations), they have to think through how they can determine the ultimate winner of the whole event (leading them to discover z-values, and their usefulness in real-life situations).

This is a modelling task I do with my 14 year old students, 2 years before they start IB. Building up skills in using Desmos, exploring and experimenting with functions, using an equation editor, and beginning skills of explanation. I've had some submissions that are better than many of the IA drafts I receive!
