Nuclear Chemistry is used in nuclear reactors to create energy. RBKM reactors use uranium 235. They work by turning water into steam and one of these reactors actually exploded a while back, it was called Chernobyl. Here is how it happened: The fundamental thing to know about nuclear reactors is they create energy by heating water and turning it to steam, this steam turns a turbine. RBMK reactor functions on this basis. A couple of Russian owners who owned the power plant had a major safety issue, if power went out the amount of time before rate backup generators kicked in and powered the plant would be too long. So the idea was to see if the spinning turbine powered by steam could spin long enough to provide power to the power plant long enough for the backup generators to kick in. This experiment was important to verify the power plant's safety. Three times this experiment was conducted and failed, the fourth time was April 26 1986.(that's when Chernobyl reactor number 4 exploded). Two main things happen inside of a RBMK reactor, radioactivity goes up or down. The operator's task is to keep this balance. Uranium is the fuel and as the atoms split, radioactivity goes up to keep the radioactivity from skyrocketing; boron control rods reduce reactivity. Unfortunately as the cool water runs through the reactor it cools it reducing radioactivity. When the water turns to steam it becomes a void, to combat this there is a positive void coefficient. This means more steam means more radioactivity. Negative temperature coefficient battles this and brings balance back to the reactor. This is because when Uranium fuel gets hotter it loses radioactivity. This is how a RBMK reactor should function. Unfortunately for the experiment, the day that the test was to take place a problem arose, the lowering of the power of the reactor to simulate loss of power was not allowed, the electrical grid needed power until later in the evening. This brought two problems, instead of canceling the experiment the owners decided to leave the generator running at half power 1200 megawatts but the second problem was that it was the night shift crew who had to conduct the experiment. The man in charge of executing this experiment was only notified about it taking place an hour or so after he arrived at work. This crew consisted of newer workers who barely understood what they were doing. Leonid Toptunov was 25 years old and had a total of about 4 months experience and he was tasked with running this completely by Anatoly Dyatlov. In all senses of what happened the largest part of blame falls onto him. Because the reactor had been running at half power, xenon that was produced as a bi product, which usually gets burned up in the reactor, had not been burned up. Xenon is like a poison in a reactor lowering the radioactivity severely. When the power was brought down to simulate power failure the xenon was still being created and now none was being burned away. The reactor was stuck at 30 megawatts. The reactor isn't hot enough to produce steam which further tilts the balance to the negative power. Now the reactor is severely unbalanced in one direction. The only way to raise power back up would be very slowly over the course of 24 hours. Toptunov and the man second in command, Akimov, are forced by Dyatlov to raise the power immediately; they pull all the control rods out. They have effectively disabled the breaks. Out of 211 rods only 6 remain in the reactor. The Uranium is cold so no negative temperature coefficient. But still they manage to get the power up to 200 megawatts. The only thing keeping the reactor in check is water and xenon. Every decision has pulled the reactor back like a slingshot and they are about to let go. This is when the test starts, pumps are shut off and now there is no water. There is no coolant and now the reactor starts to move backwards, it gains power quickly burning away the xenon, the remaining water turns to steam which increases radioactivity and creating positive void coefficient. The power skyrockets. This was all done under the idea that should something go wrong there was a fail safe. In every RBMK nuclear reactor there is a button called AZ-5, upon pressing it all boron rods are brought back into the reactor stopping it dead. This is where the Soviet Union's governmental issues come into play, because of secrecy and the inability to admit they were wrong a problem is presented. A similar instance without an explosion thankfully documented the fact that upon pressing AZ-5 the power moved up briefly before descending. This was because the tips of the boron control rods are made of graphite. Graphite speeds up radioactivity massively. This seems like the dumbest move and all because the Soviet Union decided to save a few bucks. The second the AZ-5 button was pressed the graphite tipped rod moved back into the reactor. This increase in energy ruptures a water pipe which pins the rods in place with the graphite tip exposed. Reactor number four, designed to operate at 3200 megawatts went beyond 33,000 megawatts. The pressure inside the core of the reactor has reached its limit. The reactor exploded almost immediately: 1:23:45 am April 26 1986. Oxygen rushes in and because of the superheated graphite and hydrogen causes a massive explosion far bigger than the one that blew the lid of the reactor. This instantly starts a fire, the smoke of which carries radioactive particles to the wind which then carries the radioactive particles throughout all of Europe causing major nuclear fallout the effects of which are still seen today.
