The purpose of this innovation is to provide an external urinary collection device (EUCD) for females that is comfortable and non-invasive, in comparison to indewelling urinary catheters (IUC) for the management of urine output and incontinence in patients. By using this device, patients have a decreased rate in catherter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) as well as, a decrease in the unnecessary placement of indwelling urinary catheters (Zavodnick, Harley, Zabriskie, & Brahmbhatt, 2020).

The Purewick Cather is an extenal urinary collection device that allows increased comfort in patients, monitoring of urine outout, and decreased rates of infection compared to an internal urinary collection device. As shown through the research completed by Zavodnick, Harley, Zabriskie, and Brahmbhatt (2020), the intensive care unit which this study was performed had stastically significant p-value in the rate of female CAUTIs, as well as a decrease in the total number of CAUTIs, a decreased number in IUC use, a decreased number of IUC use, and a decreased monthly average of female IUC use. With that, there was an increased satisfaction in patients that had an EUCD compared to those patients that had an IUC. These values show the postive impact that an EUCD can have on both infections, patients, and specific unit metrics.
