As a child his family was persecuted heavily by white extremist groups. His father was even supposedly killed by one of these groups. I believe this is part of the reason he became such a well known, powerful activist. Malcolm was imprisoned while he was in Boston. While he was in jail he was told about a religious group that wanted black people to become self reliant and eventually return to Africa. This group was called the Nation of Islam. He learned more about the Nation of Islam and became a member. He started hating white people thinking the were untrustworthy, dishonest, and greedy. It was after this where he started calling himself Malcolm X. X represented his lost African name he would never get to know. Malcolm did not want the name of the "blue-eyed devil" that owned his family. When he got out of jail he taught the ideals of the Nation of Islam telling black people to get rid of the shackles of slavery "by any means necessary ". He fought to have blacks revolt the control of white people because he thought blacks were the original people of the world and they were superior to whites. He promoted violence and he was a very radical civil rights leader. This is unlike MLK JR who wanted peace. Malcolm X was very radical until he broke away from the Nation of Islam and took a pilgrimage to Mecca. The pilgrimage made him rethink his views. He realized what his anger did to him, which made him a very violent person. After he returned to America he wanted a nonviolent revolution. I feel that I should learn more about it so I can be educated on this subject.
