I have a feeling that Tarrou represents existentialism as a philosophy in some way. The way he is described shows that he does not conform to the standard "live to work" ethos of Oran. I think his existence as a character is meant to be juxtaposed with the town itself.

He says, "'Oh I suppose it's the epidemic they've been having.' The Father's eyes were smiling behind his big round glasses"(18). The smile behind his eyes conveys that he knows more than the audience is aware of. What might he be thinking about this plague?

Castel seems to represent instinct and immediate logic in his short coversation with Rieux, whereas Rieux seems to represent professionalism, rationale, and calculation.

Othon is described as a "tall, thin man who resembled an educated owl." From the way Tarrou describes Othon, it seems like Othon is a very stern father and politely spiteful husband. We also know that M. Othon is a conservative magistrate judge in Oran.

Is Cottard trying to hang himself a symptom of the plague? Rieux says, "In the intervals of the man's breathing he seemed to hear the little squeals of rats" (19). Is this sound coming from cottard or a product of Rieux having heard this sound so much or is it just because so many rats were dying outside, they were actually hearing the rats. Was Grand involved? He seems to know than he says. Why would Cottard write “come in, I’ve hanged myself” (18)?
