Inspired by the song parodies on YouTube of librarians and students singing about their love of reading and the library, I was able to do it in a VERY low key way at a recent assembly (faculty are required to take turns putting on assemblies), but people really loved it! There are so many on YouTube, but I chose to use the link above, as it was the easiest to implement. We simply played the song, and we added pictures of our students and staff reading to the slides, and then had the students dance with books while it played. Fun!

I've found an immense amount of success in cultivating a "mini zine" bin right at the checkout/circulation desk in my library. Whenever a student checks out a book, they can grab a mini zine from the bin to keep forever.

Most of the zines that I print out and fold/staple are small enough to fit in a pocket, and the vast majority are age-appropriate, very short tabletop roleplaying games. It's a great way to get readers engaged with the library as a space, increase their sense of ownership in the library, and to expand their tastes with bite-sized games and zines.

My personal favorite? A mini-zine TTRPG called "Tome," which you fold into a bookmark and then use to play a game WITH the book you're currently reading!

After ad hoc style class collaborations were not really sustainable, established a Buddies Program by using dedicated Library time for at least one Buddies class. Has been an amazing community builder (notably in a time of challenge for our school). Now in our 6th year. Other specialist teachers involved now too!

Margot Berrill, Peninsula School

One of my biggest struggles with the library this year is that I no longer have an assistant, and basic circulation tasks have fallen waaaaay behind as a result. A solution I've found a lot of success with has been what I call Information Science Elective. At EBI, middle schoolers have an 80 minute (formerly 40 minute) elective block every Friday afternoon. Traditionally, the EBI librarian has run Book Club as an elective... but we have twice as much time!

So the second half of Book Club is now Information Science Elective, in which I am teaching these middle schoolers the ins and outs of how a library actually functions. A lot of that is circulation tasks, sure, but we go pretty deep: how to process new books, how to select new books, how to weed collections, how to organize and restructure libraries, how to update catalogs, etc. The students love it, and I get a whole little army of kiddos that are trained to do my bidding!
