When I attended the University of North Texas’ Symphonic Band concert, I didn’t know what to expect because I had never been to one of their performances before. As I got my ticket and went into the performance hall from the lobby I immediately noticed the grandness of the room, from the ornate lights that float above to the impressive organ sitting in the background. Once the members of the band came out and took their places, the lights dimmed and the audience hushed then the first piece, Just Flyin’ by Julie Giroux, began. Of the six compositions that were performed, I enjoyed two only slightly more than the rest. The first of which was entitled, Carnival Overture, Op. 92, by Antonin Dvorak, this piece shifts between soft, almost melancholic, melodies for which Dvorak was most noted for, and a brash clangor in a joyful and spirited tone. I thought the dichotomy of these two completely opposite effects was interesting to see in one singular piece. The penultimate piece that was performed, and my favorite of the compositions played that evening, was Danzón No. 2 by Arturo Marquéz. This piece had more rhythm and percussion influencing the structure of the composition that almost had a foundation for dancing as far as tempo is concerned. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience with the concert on a whole, and I would definitely visit again.

On every side is heard the clangor of instruments, mingled with shouts of joy and the unrestrained hilarity of the people giving vent to their feelings in songs and dances," according to Dvorak.
