The concept of privilege has been highly controversial throughout history as those individuals or groups that hold the entitlement or authority seem to neglect the minorities. One of the most critical issues in the past and present regards feminist criticism which was evident in The Crucible. Arthur Miller seemed to place importance on this issue and ensured to show this by elaborating on the fourteen women that were hung out of the twenty residence of Salem who were accused and killed due to witchcraft. Regardless of all the women's protests and novels addressing this issue of mistreatment, the controversy continues to thrive in a negative way today and is acknowledged, yet disregarded, around the world in most countries.

1. Malala Yousafzai: He Named Me Malala

The film He Named Me Malala follows a young Pakistani girl’s passion to provide an awareness to females’ rights. Growing up in Pakistan, Malala wasn’t allowed to attend school as girls didn’t have the right to an education. Her father had a strong belief that she should be allowed to receive an education as he was a school founder and a dedicated teacher. Malala’s outspoken mind and behaviors resulted in her near-death experience when she was shot by a Taliban gunman. She is now an activist for girls' rights and has established a name that is well known all around the world. This film directly relates to the unrecognized privilege of men in The Crucible. In the play, women had no power, as they were simply housewives, mothers, and slaves to their husbands. They weren't given the same rights as men and often weren’t educated just as the girls in Pakistan. Similar to the play, men do not realize the privilege they are given and grow up with in comparison to the female population, such as the equal pay for equal work which has been established throughout history.

2. Me Too Movement: Sexual Harassment and Assault

The Me-Too Movement was established to make society aware of sexual harassment and assault against women. In 2006, the phrase was developed, and it gained popularity over social media in 2017, capturing the attention of many famous individuals along with youth and adults exposed to the media. The movement encourages victims and survivors to explain their experiences over Twitter in order to provide strength to those individuals still affected by these unfortunate events that unfortunately continue to happen today. In a way, the movement allows a system of support to women in need of stability and develops a powerful structure in attempts to end sexual assault and harassment. The Me-Too Movement and The Crucible relate to each other based on this concept of support. Females have been proven to be a minority over history and I believe it is very important that we develop this system of support to aid each other. This approach has been modernized based on the adaptations of society today. The use of social media wasn’t possible during the time of the Salem witch-trials; however, the play clearly depicted this women to women reinforcement. When John Proctor’s wife was being taken from the jail, it was presented that the other women surrounding her were worried for her well-being. These women called out to her and questioned where she was being taken and this shows the support behind the minority. I strongly encourage all women, young and old, to take part in this revolutionary movement.

2. Rupi Kaur: Apology Poem

Rupi Kaur is an author and illustrator who is greatly focused on women empowerment. She is determined to portray the importance of females and the beauty they hold not only on the outside but also within. The poem I chose specifically expresses her belief that women are more than just a face, they hold power, strength, determination, passion, love, and most importantly, resilience. After reading many pieces of Rupi Kaur’s poetry, I feel inspired to help change society. I want to bring awareness to our courage. I want to bring understanding of our intelligence. The play strictly corresponds to this idea of degrading the female population. Throughout the play, many women were accused of dishonesty and working for the devil. The men running the trials were superior and neglected to fully understand the female’s testimonies before finding them guilty of witch-craft. This proves that often in history, women were only seen as beautiful figurines, but we are so much more.
