Personal Experience: Walking my Dog

I’ve had a dog since seventh grade and even though many people find walking their dog as an unwanted chore I’m the first in my family to volunteer for the job. Although the joy I find in walking my dog has never wavered the reason why I enjoy it has. When I first got a phone and earbuds I wanted to constantly listen to music or sports talk shows, uninterrupted by my family, and walking my dog was the perfect opportunity to do this. However, one day right before the Catholic High School Entrance Exam I forgot my earbuds and was therefore left unprotected from the sound of fallen leaves scraping against asphalt and my thoughts. Although intimidating at first, during this pivotal moment without the seemingly eternal distraction of my favorite playlist or Stephen A. Smith ranting about the Knicks my mind became at peace. Because for once I felt quiet and along with it I saw the beautiful trees and smelt the crisp air, these sensations allowed me to realize how lucky I was to be where I was and so with that, the last dwindling worries about my test faded away with the October wind.

Research comes from: piedmont.org
- Silence leads to greater Clarity. As your mind gains clarity it runs more smoothly.
- Silence also allows you to fully process your emotions. Moreover, processing emotions can help you feel less stress about them and make better decisions based off those “finished product” emotions.
-Finally, Silence also helps your brain to make better decisions. With Social media and cellphones our brain is always processing information and does not get enough time to recharge however, with silence we allow our brain to regenerate and think straight.

Personal Experience: On the Bus

As a Junior I have been finding my life very busy recently. It came to a peak during the months from February to April. Coincidentally these months encompassed Lent in which Catholics give things up or try something new in order to deepen their faith. Because lent would allow me to be more disciplined in achieving my goals I decided for Lent I would sit in silence on the bus instead of listening to music or scrolling through my phone. This silence proved incredibly effective in lowering my stress level and allowing me to be more grateful and happy. Instead of processing someone else’s feelings and emotions through an artist’s music or what some athlete said after a game I finally felt I had time to reflect back on my own feelings and emotions. Having this time to process what was going on in my head allowed me to reduce my stress level and stay more focused and concentrated during school. (I like to think of reflecting on what you did during the day, month, week, etc. as checking off a mental to do list and when your done reflecting, your stress levels decline just like as if you were to complete a school assignment) Furthermore, the silence allowed me to appreciate simple things in my everyday life such as the weather and the changing of seasons, and in my opinion these little specs of good things can really make your day and in my case show me how blessed my life is.
