The analogy in paragraph 3 helps you understand the conditions of people who traveled was substandard. One evidence to prove the claim is "The poor people were herded in the hold of the ship like a flock of sheep with no sanitation". This evidence proves the claim, that the authors analogy to helps you understand the condition of the people because he compares the people to a flock of sheep and also uses the words unsanitary to express the conditions the travelers had to face. The text goes on to state " The condition on crowded ship was almost unthinkable". This evidence proves the claim that the analogy helps you understand the conditions was substandard because the authors uses the words unthinkable to show the conditions the Chinese travelers had to travel in.

The analogy helps you understand the conditions people traveled in back then weren’t good nor sanitary. This is true because in the text the conditions were unsanitary with lots of people being packed up and weren’t allowed to see the deck unless Insmall groups. In the text it states “ Ocean travel in the 1850 was a hardship for anyone.” This shows that travel conditions back then wasn’t good nor sanitary . Also the analogy in paragraph three is comparing ocean travel back then in the 1850 was a hardship. This is true because in the text it states “ the poor people were herded in the hold of the ships like flock of sheep.” This shows that the analogy was comparing ocean travel back then to a hardship and weren’t sanitary.

The phrase “The Promise Land” shows the problems that the dust bowl caused. Also people in the area that the dust hit heavy moved or hoped that things got better, they also hoped that the dust bowl would stop causing more problems. This is true because in the text it states “ The catastrophe that deviated the Great Plains... and farming became difficult or impossible.” This shows that the dust bowl caused lots of problems which caused people to move. Also in the text it states “ they came in drowes eager to find good life and escaped them back home. Mild I’m climate and good for growing, California appeared to be “the promise land.” This shows why people was moving out to California and also why California was being called the promise land.

In the text, it states, “Ocean travel in 1850 was a hardship for anyone, working-class passengers, conditions on the overcrowded ship was almost unthinkable”. This shows that the ship was overcrowded and had harsh conditions. The text also states “ The poor people were herded in the hold of the ship like a flock of sheep with no sanitation”. This demonstrates that the author uses the analogy “like a flock of sheep” to show how overcrowded the shippers and how unsanitary it was. So, The analogy in paragraph three demonstrates that the ship was dirty and overcrowded.

In the text "The Trans-Pacific Passage Toward the Gold Fields" it states "The people were herded in the hold of the ship like a flock of sheep." This shows that the poor people were treated very badly and they compared a flock of sheep to poor people. In the text it also states "The passenger were allowed on deck in small groups, but only when the weather was fair. Otherwise, they spent much of the voyage penned in the utter darkness of the hold." This quote indicates that the travelers spent lot of time in the darkness with no light the whole time and were treated like animals. The text states, " The poor people were herded in the hold of the ship like a flock of sheep". This evidence shows that whenever the poor people traveled they were crowded into little spaces and were treated like animals. The text also states, "They spent much of the voyage penned in utter darkness". There was no sanitation and it was always pitch black at the place they had to stay in, this supports the claim that travel conditions back in the days, especially for the poor people, were substandard.

According to the text it states, “The poor people were herded in the hold of the ship like a flock of sheep, with no sanitation...” This evidence shows how the people were like animals, all crowded up together. The text continues to state, “The passengers were allowed on deck in small groups, but only when the weather was fair. Otherwise, they spent much of the voyage in penned in the utter darkness of the hold.” This demonstrates how the people were allow to leave until the weather was okay, Which then the people had to be in really dark places. This is shown when the text states, "The poor people were herded in the hold of the ship like a flock of sheep, with no sanitation..." The text goes on to say, "The passengers were allowed on deck in small groups, but only when the weather was fair. Otherwise, they spent much of the voyage penned in the utter darkness of the hold."

The author usage of the phrase "the Promised Land" to describe the appearance of California from the perspective of the Dust Bowl migrants reveals that the migrants feel as if that California is the place of rest and plentitude that they had all hoped for and heard of, dreamed about, or had before poverty struck. According to the text, "They came in droves, eager to find the good life that had escaped from them back home", this shows that the migrants were expecting California to be simple, laid back, and much better then the life that they were experiencing now. The text states, "Those who found work were often disappointed: workers were offered flimsy shacks to rent, which the paid for out of their low wages. In addition, local people did not always welcome the newcomers, and sometimes violence erupted." This shows that the migrants were dissapoimted in what they basically expected to be their salvation, California, and that the flawed California was very much unlike what the migrants had hoped for.

The analogy helps the reader understand the conditions people traveled in by referencing a ship that wasn’t clean holding a flock of sheep. This can be shown when the text states “The poor people were herded in the hold of the ship like a flock of sheep, with no sanitation. . . .”. This shows the horrible situation these people had to deal with by emphasizing that they were packed in like a flock of sheep. This could be compared to “but for working-class passengers, the conditions on a crowded ship were unthinkable”. This shows how the conditions were unbelievable yet true, that people had to sit on a crowded ship. This is how the author uses an analogy to emphasize on the point of how bad the conditions were on the ship.
