The U. S had been helping cuba through the war for independence from spain, the U.S was made from a very similar foundation. After Cuba had kicked out the spanish ; the U.S had Planned to takeover Cuba,  Once independence was set into place and the platt amendment was put into place. The platt amendment was an idea, that the U.S could interfere with any of the countries affairs.  After three months of refusal, input into the cuban constitution.

Since Cuba is so close to the u.s, and they were in a very similar situation, trying to break free from a stronger country. wanting to help the smaller weaker country gain independence from Spain. But after the war, Americans saw profit to be held in Cuba, Cuba had land.  And during the expansion that was the biggest thing that america was looking for and the idealism went into realism. For businesses and military control to be held in the small part of that island. Guantanamo Bay Naval Base was given to the use for helping them, the platt amendment allowed the u.s to be involved in all Cuban affairs.
