Andre Brenton defined surrealism by stating, "psychic automatism in its pure state, by which one proposes to express - verbally, by means of the written word, or in any other manner - the actual functioning of thought." He was a writer who first elaborated the idea which was then composed by other artists.

2. At first people were confused to the new idea that was brought up and thought it was somehow strange since it challenges the idea of real things and also unreal things and somehow meeting in the middle. 

 3. This was necessary as it would be explored later on in the future. surrealism appeared during ww2 and even more frequently from migrating surrealist/European artists to away from Europe.

4. surrealism is consider wacky or weird because it's trying to convey the subconscious/thought. To make something appear real yet not at the same time. This instead captures the artist's perception of the subconscious.

5. Surrealism shared much of the anti-rationalism of Dada, the movement out of which it grew. The original Parisian Surrealists used art as a reprieve from violent political situations and to address the unease they felt about the world's uncertainties. By employing fantasy and dream imagery, artists generated creative works in a variety of media that exposed their inner minds in eccentric, symbolic ways, uncovering anxieties and treating them analytically through visual means. Abstract Expressionism and feminism? 
6. Was there a need and how was this addressed through art? 
 - The original intention was to liberate thought in art by throwing away rationality
7. What mediums were represented?
 - art, writing, sculpture, spoken word?

Explain the two types of main Surrealism:
(a) Automatically without thought and familiar objects
(b) realistic setting with impossible dream like situations
 - the former isn't thought about at all, while the latter uses thought to create a nonsensical picture?
