this first week we all are looking at different songs for our solos and how they would contrast. I have been looking at multiple songs that may be perfect for my two contrasting solos and I have written them down in my notebook, these songs are Roxie by Chicago and the grudge by Olivia Rodrigo, the first song (Roxie) showcases the Fossie style and i need to try engage that within my tap piece, the second song (grudge) showcases a more saddening and warm felt style so i need to prove that curtain style in my contemp/ballet piece. I have also written down all the notes that are on my phone from when Emma (tutor) showed us a presentation about our solos and how we can improve them successfully. I also just started research on how to create an effective solo and I’ve learnt how to improve my dynamics and presentation during my solo audition such as at the start of the audition don’t stutter and don’t act nervous Infront of the panel , have confidence in yourself and have confidence that the audition will be successful, even if it doesn’t go to plan, keep going with it. From start to finish make sure I am in a good state of mind and that I have composure. I have also started my self-assessment of which ill upload onto my Padlet next week.

for this week we all showed everyone what we have been working on solo wise. I have gotten up to 40+ seconds on one of my solo dances, I have also been given some feedback from one of my tutors and some students that watched my solo: from the tutor- make sure to keep my eyeline up and don’t look like I’m just putting different moves together and make it all flow together. From the students- in one of the rolls it does not look right so make sure I make it look better and/or change it, so it looks more appealing to the audience, also do not look like I am scared. I will use this feedback by always trying to keep my line of sight upright and be confident in my movements (not looking down unless choreography suggests otherwise), i will also practice upon my army rolls and again look more theoretically emotional and not scared since my stimulus/intent of this piece is sadness not nervousness. This week I will also focus on my showreel a bit more on cap cut and edit some of my music.

so far I believe this solo could use some improvement, I tend to look around quite a lot and I look unsure of what I am doing, I also tend to fidget a lot with my hands before I start my solo. during week 2 moving forward I need to look at this solo again and think to myself about what I need to change or add to make it more suitable, upfront I do believe I need to add more ballet elements to this solo as I describe that this is a contemporary-ballet piece above this post, I also believe I need to add more jumps/leaps and I need to improve the army roll near the beginning of the piece. the stimulus/intent I have created for this solo is "sadness" and I do need to show this in my solo.

during this week i have been looking at my other contrasting solo and i have been adding to my first solo, i have looked back on my notes and have discussed with others in my group what i might want to add and I'm taking suggestions/ideas into consideration. in my first solo i have looked at changing some actions from week 1 and I've also been figuring out levels and how to put them in my solo. for my second solo i have looked and researched the Fossy type of style that's in Chicago since that is what the song is from, and i have implemented that kind of style in my work. my two contrasting solos are contemporary-ballet and tap, and the songs are "the grudge" by Olivia Rodrigo and "Roxie" from Chicago (musical). in the first week first solo you'll see that i may have improvised some of the dance and i'm looking around a lot, this was because i didn't have a full understanding of the choreography i made yet, during week 2 and 3 i have looked at not improvising on anything and not looking around so much to find some action to do in the dance.

this week I have been focusing on improving and developing both my contrasting solos, for my first solo (tap) I am working on adding more advanced tap skills such as pickup changes and split wings and I am looking more at the style I want to focus the dance around and what the intent of confidence is, to achieve this I'd need to look at the word as a whole and how I could improve the sense of confidence in my dance, for example I need to keep my eyeline slightly higher than normal and have more facial expressions (have an ego about myself characteristically). for my second solo (contemporary-ballet) I am looking at adding more emotion in the dance since it is an emotional song and my intent is the feeling of sadness, I am also adding more ballet elements instead of it being mostly contemporary and a little ballet it needs to be around 50-50, to achieve my emotional intent I need to focus on not looking confused in my dance and letting the choreography all fall/flow together.

This solo for me is going well, I have picked up the idea of confidence in my solo and have some sharp and difficult movements in this. the only slight problem I still have is that it's not all the way finished and I had to improvise near the end which was not ideal, I also looked down quite a bit so that made me look quite nervous, over the past weeks I have been focusing on those aspects e.g. looking slightly higher than regular eyeline and remembering all of my choreography, in the next two weeks I will continue to improve on this.

this week I am looking at finishing my solos, I only have a few seconds left on both of my solos and I need to come up with a finish to them both, to do this I may look back on my solos and add some repetition from the start of them into my finish e.g. if I do a calypso near the start of my dance to the front then I could do it again near the finish of my dance to the back to show I have looked back on my dance and have added that in again. furthermore I could add more levelling in my solos as right now they don't look to have too many levels, I need to also focus on my musicality and facial expressions/overall expressions, to improve this i could do the solos again without expressions/levels and again with expressions/levels to see what changed in the dynamic, through this week I will also be looking at building a climax before the ends of my solos e.g. building up to do bigger movements and more travel elements like jumps/leaps, kicks and spins, to achieve this I could look at the jumps/leaps, kicks and spins in my solos then I could learn more from the internet that I haven't done before adding a sense of achievement. finally this week I need to focus on using my eyeline and arm movements e.g. when I'm doing a drag with my legs my arms could go to the diagonal instead of just loose beside me and keeping my eyeline just above usual and not always to the front of the room. to improve upon these attributes I would need to allow myself time to play with where my focus of my eye line should go in my solos and when I am doing an arm line I need to really extend an reach my arms instead of having them looking very dull and off-putting to the audience.

In this week I will be polishing up my solos and making them look presentable for the audition panel, I must look back on my notes from past weeks and look at my solo work from past weeks to decipher what I can and cannot leave in my solos, this week is all about projecting myself and focusing on my technique, overall expression and the ability to use my musicality correctly. This week is also about repetition, getting both my solos in my head is crucial for success, I need to try find studios in the college at any free points to repeat and film my solos to get them in my memory. Every week in the past has led me to this week and I need to focus on what I had learnt in the past weeks to ensure this week goes to plan, if something does go wrong in this week I need to learn from that mistake and keep progressing, there is no time for setbacks. In the audition panel I need to stay calm and preserved, the speaking part of the audition is easy just stating my name, songs, what I'll be performing style wise and what my choreographic intents are, In the two solos I have an idea of where I need to be in the room, how I change my shoes, what to wear and how to present myself. I need to know my solos by heart, if I do forget then I need to improvise until I pick up the next part of the choreography but hopefully that will not be the case. I will explain in my evaluation if this audition panel went well or not but in the meantime I need to do all of the points above and focus.

this is my third option and at looking at this course it seems very interesting to me.

this is a 2 year course and it gives an MA(masters) specialist title degree in dance, it is a part time course and is located in the shock out arts. in the course overview it does explain that there is one focus such as commercial/hip-hop styles, but there are other things such as choreography or an associated subject like dance education or dancer well-being. this MA develops my research, critique and synthesis skills, self direction, independence helping me to prepare myself for a career in dance.

the entry requirements are as follows: normally you'd need at least an upper second class honours degree in the subject (dance) but equivalent qualifications can work too. the fees: £4,250/academic year there are no options on the site about accommodation but i will contact them about it in the future if i decide on this university.

spotlight is essentially a website that targets performers, agents and casting directors/professionals and gives them certain resources and how to contact different people in professions like photography, drama and dance, agency, casting, publicity etc.

they explain in their page that it's their role to keep stages and screens filled with talented performers, so we can continue to watch our favourite characters come to life.

there are also rooms and studios that you can hire tailored to you, there are things called wet hire and dry hire where wet hire is basically for casting professionals including a studio space, a professional camera operator, adjustable lighting and full technical support. the dry hire is for people who prefer managing their own sessions, a balanced space, you can bring your own equipment or use the filming setup provided, these studios are mostly used for rehearsals, production meetings and independent filming projects.

history of spotlight:

In 1927, stage manager Keith Moss conceived the Spotlight Directory to seamlessly connect theatre directors and casting directors with actors. His pioneering publication featured 236 performers, including two exceptional dogs.

Rodney Millington, joining as Managing Director, steered Spotlight to become a casting staple by World War II, securing an exemption from paper rationing due to its significance in bolstering morale.

After the war, the Seale family took the helm, advancing Spotlight over three generations. They set up central London casting studios and moved the directory online in 1997. The final print edition appeared in 2017, marking a full digital transition.

they quote at the end of the about page:

"our greatest role is helping you find yours" this indicates that they give all the support they can for any young performers future.
