Other countries have mandatory voting.

3. It would make elections fairer.

4. Some people don’t care about politics

I picked #1 as the strongest reasoning because as the article suggest, democracy is made up of the people, and is therefore more efficient when more participants are involved, "we the people". This makes it logical and emotional as it builds on the importance of community created in democracy.

What makes this place distinct from others?

Manhattan has a very diverse aesthetic. Walking around the city i observed that while one street may look incredibly modern and developed, the street next to it often has more old fashioned architect mixed in with it. The buildings are built very close together to adapt to the high population in New York, and promote walking more then driving. This can be contributed to the fact that there is often a lot of traffic in the city, making it more convenient to walk or take the train.

Before this walking research i had not been to this area very often, and when i had it was for a short period of time in a car. this gave me less of an opportunity to take in some of the smaller details. Because i grew up visiting the city a lot the environment and architect is very familiar to me, and specifically made it easy to spot tourists in the area.

Simply through the research method of observation you can get hints of how old some of the buildings are. The St Patricks Cathedral is a perfect example of this, being built in 1878. Which is evident in the style in which the cathedral was built. The local businesses here also play a massive part in how much information is shared about this area. Businesses massively promote themselves through massive ads on billboards, or eye catching logos in their signature colors to attract customers.

All the shopping stores and restaurants around the area attract a lot of people. On my walk i observed families, tourists, students, friends, and workers go about their day doing whatever activities they had planed. In this specific area a lot of the clothing stores leaned towards a more expensive price however. This lead to a lot of their audience very clearly being on the more wealthier side and very clear social marks exists because of that.

Walking research pushed me to be more actively aware of the sounds, people, buildings, smells, and life around me. It forced me to notice things that i normally would not, which also helped me have a better appreciation for a city i was normally indifferent towards. Seeing all the different types of people that are going about their day put things into a different perspective. As someone who was born and raised in New York, seeing the tourists stop to take pictures, made me think about how living so close to the city is a privilege in itself.

"I couldn't hear myself" It was the fourth of July. At first I was focused on the burn, but it turned out that my eardrum was ruptured. I was 13 at the time, and that left me legally deaf in my left ear. I went to several doctors over the years, and there's no way to heal it-- it will just get progressively worse over the years as I age. And as a competitive pianist and violinist, it was difficult to adapt while not being able to hear my own playing as well as increased hearing sensitivity. The medical bills weren’t cheap. “And he never apologised either, my neighbour"

For my map I decided to make it plant themed to show my growth throughout the year. I made the main checkpoints brighter colors to make it more visible to the viewer to highlight where to go. My map starts at the red pin mark, where it begins with the day that I moved in. To continue on the map, the viewer would follow the blue water fall, going through the challenge of remembering and adjusting to the new schedule. After that they would be at the second checkpoint at the first classes of the semester. The challenge they would have to pass after is learning time management, something that I struggled to do. After this they would reach the making friends checkpoint, and would continue onto midterms. The challenge they would overcome for midterms would be studying before reaching the class registration checkpoint. This is the biggest building to show that the journey would soon be wrapping up. The large lake at the end of my map is the final destination, labeled to be continued to show that there is more to come.
