Tracey, you may need to refresh my memory. This semester is so busy I'm having trouble keeping track of everything! I vaguely remember that there is a requirement that we do some research, so can you please clarify. Grades in the 11200 class are typically above average so I wouldn't necessarily expect a great deal of grade improvement, but I'm hoping the experience is better for the students - more fun, more meaningful, more real life which is quite qualitative in nature. I don't a great way to gather data on the current classroom set up this semester because I am not teaching the course, so I won't have much comparative data. So, my dilemma is I'm not sure what to do for research.

Nancy

I am interested in looking at retention in the Forensic and Investigative Science program between students that have taken my course, FIS 20600, in an active learning classroom vs. a normal lecture style classroom. I have access to the student's declared major or pre-major when they took my course (through Faculty Center) but I would need help determining the student's ending major. It would also be interesting to see if overall student grades are improved in the advance forensic science courses, Forensic Chemistry and Forensic Biology, after taking my course in an active learning involvement. These are just some of my ideas. I would have to teach this course multiple times in the active learning classroom to have a representative student sample.

Gina

Pedagogy

I've been working for a while with social pedagogies, which means bringing "classroom" and "real life" together, but I've been doing that with the idea of getting students into "ownership," "citizenship," "agency," and terms of this kind (essentially, realizing and owning themselves as learners, potentially life-long learners: self-definition). I'd be really curious to see how I can build ALC spaces into that project, and I'm not sure if that's best done by observations, student feedback, and/or other strategies.
Patrick
