The play begins with the Birling family sat around a table with port, cigars and cigarettes giving of the intention that they are rather wealthy as they have a parlour maid just 'clearing the table'. All five characters are in evening
dress of the period, claiming some sort of occasion is going on at this time in the play. As for the characters there is a heavy-looking man (the leader of the household) Arthur Birling, a cold women in her mid 50s Sybil Birling, a pretty girl in her 20s Sheila Birling who seems to be rather excited, Gerald Croft an attractive 30 year old who has the heart of Sheila and comes from a well off town, and Eric Birling who is quite shy and rather out of the picture a little.

When the women leave the table after the meal to and talk about clothes and smoke cigarettes, Gerald is left with Birling.. After Arthur offers him a cigar we know he is trying to get down to business. Sometime later Birling starts to bring Lady Croft into the scenario and gets rather embarrassed. Birling seems quite blunt about it all and soon reveals he has a knighthood waiting for Gerald. Prominently Birling then goes on to talk about when he was a mayor before making some unecassary jokes towards Gerald. When Eric enters the room the whole atmosphere changes absolutely we start to see how Birling wants Eric to be more like Gerald. By this time Birling has had to much to drink and starts to blab on about him regarding to school and how he thinks people are cranks..we see that he thinks that the community is stupid and every man must mind their own business..
