The leaders of this revolution were mainly young samurai's who were motivated by growing domestic problems and the threat of foreign encroachment. They wanted to create a country that would be equal with western countries.

After the Meiji Restoration, Japan got stronger as a country. They got:

*a highly centralized government

*a constitution

*more transportation and communication systems in place

*more education

*no more feudal system/restrictions

*industrial revolution begins rapidly

*a more powerful army and navy

What did the changes cause.

Emperor Meiji, the renamed emperor Mutsuhito,

brought the biggest change ever to hit japan. He modernized the army,

created a main leader, no more clans in fighting. It is the Japanese Unification.

This was brought on after witnessing China fall to European culture. These reforms

changed the Government making it more like the European countries. This allowed

for him to end the isolationism Japan had been experiencing. He allowed people to

study abroad. Japan industrialized faster then any other nation. This also allowed

open trade between other powers.

"Artist Yoshitoshi Taiso depicts the arrival commodore Perry in Edo Bay in 1853. Perry's hulking black warships sent the japanese a strong message about U.S. Military power."
