Glasses

These glasses are a symbol representing the main character Meg Murry. One of the major conflicts in this book is Meg's struggles with her identity. Meg is often described as awkward, impatient, and impulsive. These personality traits along with her wild hair and glasses cause others to see her as stupid and a weirdo. In the beginning, she even describes herself as "repulsive-looking" and "dumb". However, throughout the story, Meg learns to love and accept herself. It's also said that despite Meg's perception of herself as ugly, she is described as "unexpectedly beautiful" without her glasses.

Setting

Camazotz is a planet in the novel that has succumb to "The Black Thing", and is under the control of IT. They travel here in order to save Charles Wallace and Meg's father. Evil

The Black Thing is the main antagonist of the book, as its essentially the force of evil. It's dark shadow has enveloped the dark planet, Camazotz and controls its citizens through mind control. This dark shadow represents the conflict of Good vs Evil in the novel.

Plot Summary

Meg, a 13-year-old girl who struggles to fit in at school, sets off on a journey through space and time with her younger brother Charles Wallace and friend Calvin to rescue her father. They are accompanied by 3 supernatural beings who wish to fight against The Black Thing, the embodiment of evil. In order to save her father, they must overcome IT, a giant brain-shaped being that controls the people of Camazotz.

Will they prevail? Or will they succumb to the forces of Evil?

Although the plot itself was basic, I was drawn in through its elements of fantasy, the unique characters, and tackling of philosophical issues.
