First you have to check that no-one else has that domain name. This can be done by domain name registering websites. If you have a domain name that is taken then you need to make small changes to the URL or use a different domain name. Once you have a domain name that is free you need to buy it so that no-one else can use it.

What's the difference between shared and dedicated hosting

Shared:

It's a relatively cheap form of hosting and it's where most websites live. It normally comes with all the relatively facilities (i.e. email). You have to share the facilities with other websites. What happens on your website could affect other websites. If you have a lot of visitors then you'll need to move to another web hosting.

Dedicated:

It's like a box with all the computer bits and in a remote rack. You can do anything you want on the website by buying as many as resource upgrades as you can afford. You can have many visitors as long as you have the space. You'll have to stay within the law.
