The Battle of Iwo Jima (February 19 - March 26 1945)

The Battle of Iwo Jima was one of the last battles fought between the Japanese and the Americans in the Pacific. It was also one of the bloodiest battles for both sides. The reason for this is due to the island's close proximity to the Japanese home islands, and the fact that the Japanese considered it to be part of their nation. The horrific casualties experienced by the Americans helped reinforced the sense of how terrible and costly an invasion of the actual Japanese islands would be.

Attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii-January 7th,1941

A strategic surprise attack on the US from Japan on the US Naval Base of Pearl harbor. Japanese aircraft sunk and damaged many US battleships, naval vessels and aircraft. Many men were also killed. This pushed America to join the war. After this attack that killed many of their men they had to officially join the war to fight back against Japan.

Battle of the Coral Sea-May,4,1942

A naval air engagement where US attacked Japan at there port. The US invaded Port Moresby and Tulgi. The US flew their aircraft near these ports and launched bombs on them. This victory was a moral boost for the US. It made the country more powerful after the major defeat at Pearl Harbor.

Firebombing of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan

On March 9, 1945, 334 B-29s took off to raid with 279 of them dropping 1,665 tons of bombs in Tokyo. The United States hoped that by causing damage to Japanese citizens, the morale would suffer. The bombing was supposed to damage the industrial production of warfare materials (which they didn't have a lot of production to begin with because they ere low on natural recources) and break the will of the Japanese people. This attack brought death, and suffering all across Japan and the Japanese people.

Battle of Midway-June 4,1942

A battle that America fought with all aircraft. The United States attacked Japan's first line carrier strength. This Battle secured dominance for the US in World War 2. It also prevented Japan from moving farther in the pacific.

The Trinity Tests, Los Alamos, NM

On July 16, 1945, was when the world's first nuclear explosion occurred. Scientists denoted the first atomic bomb in an experiment known as "The Gadget" at 5:29 am Mountain time at the sight Trinity Site in the Jornada del Muerto Dessert. The bomb was placed on top of a 100-foot tall steel tower that was designated zero. The success of the Trinity test meant that the bomb could be used by the U.S. military and marked the beginning of one of the most delayed weapons used ever to exist.

Battle of Guadalcanal- August 1942-February 1943

A series of World War II see clashes between Japan and the Allies. Marked a major turning point in favor of the Allies. The US invaded the smaller islands of Florida and the north of Guadalcanal. Japanese was surprised with this attack.

Bombing of Hiroshima, Hiroshima, Japan

On August 6, 1945, an American b-29 dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. The explosion killed an estimated 80,000. Tens of thousands of Japanese citizens would die later on due to radiation exposure. The goal was to have the Japanese surrender but after this attack, the Japanese did not surrender which led to the United States dropping another bomb on Nagasaki to try and get the Japnese to surrender.

Battle of the Philippine Sea-June 19-20 1944

A naval war between the US and Japan. It is commonly referred to as the greatest carrier Battle of the war. The US wanted to attack Japan and force them out of the Philippines in which they were occupying at the time. The war stopped Japan from conducting large carrier attacks. The US sunk 3 of their carriers.

Bombing of Nagasaki, Nagasaki, Japan

On August 9, 1945, happened three days after the bombing of Hiroshima. Like in Hiroshima, the United States dropped another atomic bomb all over Nagasaki which killed an estimated 40,000 people. The emperor of Japan Hirohito announced the surrender of the country in a radio address on August 15, 1945, after deadly bombings. They had to do a second attack because the United States' goal was to force the Japanese to surrender which they didn't do in Hiroshima. They also did a second bombing to keep the SOviets out of Japan by displaying American military power.

Battle for the Mariana Islands: June-November 1944

These islands where the last part of the Japan Central Pacific perimeter. The US captured these islands. This made Japan's supply lines suffer making Japan much less powerful. It also pushed the defense west to the Philippines and opened Japan's homeland.

V-J Day USS Missouri Tokyo Bay, Japan

August 15, 1945, was Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) which took place in Tokyo Bay that marked the end of WW2. This was a celebration that would be held in the United States to celebrate the victory over Japan. August 15th was the day that Preisendt Harry Trumean signed that the Japanese surrended which were signed in Tokyo Bay. September 2, was when the Japanese representives signed the offical instrument of surrender.

Liberation of the Philippines-Oct 20,1944

Released the Philippines from years of torment from Japan. In 1944, the US dropped Atomic bombs on the mainland of Japan, after this they were forced to surrender the Philippines. The US made the Philippines independent in 1946. This ended the Pacific War in the south.
