This map shows the dates when the Portuguese empire reached different parts of the world. It shows how far the empire was able to expand, bringing great pride to them at the time. Because of their success in exploration and colonization, they viewed themselves as being extremely successful.

In Gil Vicente's "Boat of Hell," all characters are doomed to the ship to Hell, except for the knights. As the knights were the ones who helped expand the Portuguese Empire, they were allowed to go to Heaven. Vicente is painting the Portuguese expansion in a positive light, rewarding the people who fought. However, these knights were equally as corrupt as the other characters as they were destroying other civilizations in order to expand.
