The Grapes of Wrath
1. Faith- The word "faith" is important because it is involved as one of the central main themes of the novel. Faith is utilized in the theme of never losing hope by having faith among family in the face of hardships and terror.
2. Dust- The word "dust" is significant because not only does it refer to the Dust Bowl, it also sets the mood for the novel, which is hopelessness and despair of the Joad family.
3. We- The word "we", while seeming minuscule, is important because in chapter fourteen, Steinbeck uses the word "we" as a call to action in order to describe the process of change, or rather, the movement of people to California, which made many critics state the novel containing communist undertones.
4. Family- The word "family" is crucial to the novel, as the Joad family's struggles on the journey to California are documented. In a grander scale, the word "family" is not just limited to the Joads. Rather, it describes the entire working class and the farmers, some united by a struggle for work, shelter, and a better life.

grapes of wrath

1. Vacant (115)- The word "vacant" in the book represents the emptiness of the farms and the land from the several families leaving west. Families are being forced to leave their homes and everything they value behind and once their presence is gone, their home becomes as vacant as their hearts.
2. Unity (150)- The word "unity" is the foundation of what Tom's family represents throughout the beginnings of the book. Without the union of the family and the dependence on each other to survive the harsh and long journey ahead, the mission to California would be even more challenging.
3. Inveterate (95)- This word is important because Tom has unchangeable habits of committing crimes and always follows the path to troubles. In the novel he is not supposed to be leaving the state because he is on patrol but he continues to the road without acknowledging the consequences.
4. Tragedy (74)- The word "tragedy" is the outcome of many experiences on the road to California by the Joad family. Throughout the novel, many tragic situations will occur for the family to cope with including tragedies of death of loved ones and the general hardships of trying to survive with limited items such as money and supplies.
