Hermes, a greek god and the son of Zeus, is known for being the messenger of Gods. He provides divine protection to cattle and sheep and travelers worship him for his protection on the road. If there was any small fortune, travelers would dedicate their luck to Hermes. Hermes is also one of the most mischievous and cunning out of the 12 Olympian gods and his character showed that he was curious and playful. He was also a patron of music, and was said to have a crucial role in creating an instrument called the kithara.

Hermes was a god of many things. he was of trade, luck fertility, wealth, etc. Being the god of luck meant that he was the god of anything that fell under that category, for example, any good luck or random good events were his doing. He was however perceived as the messenger for gods in the Odyssey. He is sometimes even credited for the invention of music. In many portraits and sculptures from the olden times, he is shown as a man with a long beard. Sometimes cloth in a long tunic, but always wearing a hat with wings. More recently he is portrayed as a young man and no beard still in the same hat.

Herme's Role

In the Odyssey, Hermes's role to the gods was being a messenger and guiding the dead to the underworld for Hades. Hermes also helps Odysseus in the story by saving him from a powerful goddess by giving him a herb that grants him immunity and tells him how to defeat the goddess. When Odysseus travels to the underworld to seek advice to go home, one of his men kill one of the golden cattle that they weren't supposed to kill thus leading to Odysseus being captured for seven years. Hermes helps Odysseus escape by convincing the goddress to let him go. Hermes's role is important in the Odyssey because he guides those of which he chooses to give his wisdom to and save.
