This past year, I have begun to analyze data in order to better understand the needs of my students. "Interpreting data allows teachers to identify the strengths and weaknesses of an entire class as well as individual students. As they examine the data, teachers can develop hypotheses about factors that affect students’ learning and ways to improve instruction to help all students achieve" (NAESP, 2011). The Avon City Schools District has been using MAP data for placement for several years; however, I did not receive training on how to use it within the classroom. I choose to dive deeper into the program because I realized that it offers a wealth of information that goes beyond simple numerical data. Through this program I was able to group students based on need, which was not only more efficient as it save time with pre-assessment, but also with the effectiveness of instruction. When analyzing the data I take the following steps: 1) Here's what: 2) So what? 3) Now what? These steps have helped me to understand and breakdown findings in order to better instruct my students. For example, based on the data below, I discovered that I was more successful with my honors classes, and my numbers for my one regular education class was significantly lower. I made changes to my methods to better meet their needs.

Over the course of my studies, I realized that time in my classroom was not used effectively because I was always worried about my students being in the same spot, working on the same content. This ultimately slowed growth down because students were always waiting for their peers to finish. As a result, I implemented a new class philosophy: We are never done working. "To do so, students have to know what they are learning, why they are learning it, what means to be "good" at this learning, and what it means to have learned" (Fisher & Frey, 2016, p. 3). Before beginning any lesson, I introduce an anchor lesson, which is an enrichment or remediation activity. This is where students have become more responsible for their own learning. Even though I have assignments determined for those reasons, student will ask if they can work on specific enrichment or remediation activities. Attached below is an example of an unit where students advanced at their own pace, while conferencing with me.

I have taken on a leadership role in my school in several areas. I was on the committee to choose a new textbook for the language arts department. I was looking for a book that would meet the needs of the 21st century. Forbes identifies a leader as someone is "...robust and rigorous in terms of self-evaluation and data analysis with clear strategies for improvement" (Morrison, 2013).

They are robust and rigorous in terms of self-evaluation and data analysis with clear strategies for improvement.

I fought for the textbook because it had the rigor and alignment to our curriculum. Many teacher did not like the idea of this textbook because it was entirely online; however, I trained in the use of the textbook, and I was able to lead my team with its implementation. I was also a member of the Building Leadership Team. I was a team leader for the 6th grade staff for which I would communicate with administration. We met monthly to discuss issues or concerns within our building.

Last year, I finished mentoring a new teacher, which required meetings, observations, and support. She successfully passed the final part of the RESA program, and is a fully certified teacher. I observed three times for the 2018-19 school year, and conference with her following each observation. This process was equally as important to me because it caused me look more closely at my teaching philosophy, which led to my professional growth in that I began to recognize the importance of a professional learning community. " Working together on behalf of students in a school is a lot like a marriage. The educators in schools often come from different backgrounds and cultures. These cultures and backgrounds may be diverse, yet they have to unite, just like a marriage" (Applebaum, 2009, p. 15).

My past practices were driven by classroom management, which is not to say that classroom management is not a priority; however, I have come to realize that it is through appropriate, challenging methods that not only does the classroom management follow, but student instruction improves. I now believe that students need to take ownership and be invested in order for authentic learning to take place. Through my classes, I have evolved in my understanding of best practices for learning. Students in my class move through the curriculum at their own pace, and I act more as a facilitator to learning. For example, I create a learning grid, which does not require students to complete all steps. The steps that they complete is based on pre assessment and need. "...students are so engaged when they are working on projects that disruptive behavior is lessened" (Applebound, 2009, p. 84). This ensures that every minute of time is utilized for authentic self-driven learning.

Quality writing requires students to not only be able to identify the traits of writing, but also to consider them as they write. The best way for students come to this understanding is through modeling. "Modeling is essential to the teaching of writing. Students desperately need to know what is going on in the head of a writer as the composition process unfolds" (Culham, 2018, p. 27). I have changed my method of instruction in regard to writing, and a result my student's writing has grown greatly as demonstrated through writing assessments based on year start to year end. Student were able to interpret and apply writing rubrics in order to improve the quality of their writing.

I am constantly in search of programs and curriculum that will improve our teaching practices. I researched and brought new technology to the attention to the curriculum director, which lead to trial implementations to see if they were a match for a district. For example, the language arts department was looking for writing programs that could take away some of the time commitment that is required when grading papers. I tried the program out and reported to the team and curriculum director that while it saved time for me, it made kids hate writing. The program took the fun and love out of writing, so we decided to pass on this.

For my Capstone project, I researched the relationship between active listening and reading comprehension. Students used an active listening strategy while reading over the course of six reading assignments. They were assessed on their ability to answer reading comprehension questions following the reading. While reading, students were asked to stop periodically and share what they read with a partner. That partner would listen and add any missed information, thus active listening. The results of the study showed that student scores did not increase with the use of active listening. This information is available for review.

It is important for students to know how they learn best so that they can take control of their own learning.

At a school-wide gifted education meeting, the curriculum director asked that we look for ways to enrich material for our gifted population. About 1/3 of our population test as gifted in at lease one content area based on the state assessment. One of the items on the School Improvement Plan addressed that. I shared that I use an Anchor Strategy. This strategy is used when students have completed an assignment or successfully met a learning goal. This activity is not required but is used to enrich. "Differentiated instruction and response to intervention go hand-in-hand" (Applebaum, 2009, p. 84). Often times students have the freedom to choose how they wish to demonstrate the enrichment, or me time to work on remediation as needed. This board is posted in classroom with a list of activities that students can choose from.

Typically, students choose to work in groups with friends, but I stress the importance of working in groups where their needs be best met. After having students take the learning inventory at the beginning of the year, they have a sheet where they record all of their results. They refer to this sheet often for that purpose. Depending on my desired learning outcome, I tell students to group themselves using a specific characteristic on the results sheet. I may group them by Divergent faction or Hogwarts houses, or I may put specific personality traits together. According to Fisher & Frey, "Teachers may need to use multiple methods to capitalize on multiple ways of learning" 2016, p. 164). I utilize mutliple strategies in order to meet the needs of all my students.

Throughout the course of my studies I have learned that authentic assessments are essential to show intellectual growth through formative and summative assessments. I have also learned that assessment is not synonymous with grading in that a grade does not always have to be associated with an assessment. In fact, it can detrimental because it can hold students back from taking risks in learning, which leads to growth through creativity.

In the last year, I have incorporated more modeling into my practice. I model my own writing and revision process, and when I do that, I use the same traits of writing rubric that I give to the students. I introduced each trait one at a time, and when I teach the trait, I let the students practice assessing pieces of writing. I first go through the process while thinking aloud. Students work with partners a few times, and then they assess independently. At the end of the process, they are able to assess their own writing with a critical eye.

The middle school language arts department has been meeting with the curriculum director on a regular basis because we are frustrated with the amount of time that we are dedicating to assessing writing. We tried two online computer programs, as well as guest speakers. The frustration continued because those attempts did not cut back on work load, so I created a rubric to address that. The rubric consists of two parts: content and traits. In this way, we can assess quickly and with minimal comments. It is the comments that slow us down.
