Unilever recognises that its success is intertwined with broader systemic changes. To drive progress, they are leveraging their influence and collaborating with key stakeholders in business, government, and society. Social initiatives play a crucial role in this effort. By supporting communities, farmers, and small retailers, Unilever aims to create value for everyone involved. Achieving a living wage for example will require a concerted effort from governments, suppliers, and Unilever itself. As a major employer and taxpayer, Unilever is in a unique position to advocate for and implement these changes.

Unilever's environmental initiatives demonstrate its strong commitment to ESG and in turn results in increased brand loyalty and reputation and reduce costs associated with implementing sustainable practices. As a result, it is both beneficial to Unilever and its stakeholders that the business prioritises these environmental initiatives.

When companies 'practise what they preach', it is noticed. In Unilever's case, their drive to sustainable sourcing and carbon reduction neatly aligns with their mantra: 'Sustainability is a strategic imperative for our business' (per Unilever public disclosures). When sourcing materials sustainably, over time, this will reduce costs and drive operational efficiencies. A positive impact to the organisation's reputation will follow in parallel, as customers increasingly want to see sustainable products and practices (Unilever's advertisements can promote and advocate), and investors are looking for sustainable companies.

Unilever's social activities are promoting the 'S' in their 'ESG' strategy, and has seen Unilever not only strive for gender balance in their (internal, organisational) senior management roles, but also actively advocate for women in business outside of their own operations, in the communities in which they operate. These initiatives, and the commitment behind it, are well published, reporting on and visibility in the public domain, which is attracting more talent to the organisation and impacting investors to re-point capital to Unilever - which in turn is contributing to long-term value.

Unilever's commitment to sustainable sourcing and carbon reduction reflects their long-term ESG strategy that is built into its Growth Action Plan 2030, with climate and nature being treated as their core business priorities rather than side initiatives. This is made clear in their Climate Transition Action Plan, which targets net zero across their value chain by 2039, focuses on near-term science-based emission cuts, and links lower-carbon operations with more longer lasting agricultural supply chains through measures like regenerative agriculture and deforestation-conscious sourcing. The initiatives strengthen Unilever's reputation by signalling credible, investor-backed action on sustainability, which can improve trust with shareholders, consumers, and regulators, while also improving operation efficiency by reducing energy-related emissions, lowering supply chain costs and making sourcing more resilient to climate and resource shocks.

Unilever’s social initiatives support ESG success by strengthening the “S” in ways that also protect business performance: better diversity and inclusion helps attract and retain talent and improve agility and innovation, while community and livelihoods programs make key supply chains more stable and resilient. Together, that tends to reduce operational and reputational risk, reinforce trust with consumers and stakeholders, and ultimately underpin long-term value creation through a more motivated workforce and a healthier, more reliable ecosystem of suppliers and communities that Unilever depends on to grow.

Unilever commitment to sustainable sourcing and carbon reduction, is shown in it's reporting to not only identify risks, but to prioritise ESG issues and integrate them into their operations. They note that it not sustainable to 'keep pace with ESG challenges', but a strategic imperative in order for the business to success. They have listed identifiable goal (actions) on the way to their ambitious targets. It is an active strategy, that clearly defines the roadmap to success.

Unilever see this as way of building resilience, market leadership and growth through innovation, operational efficiency and supply chain engagement. They see their ESG strategy and progress as an approach to future-proofing their business, and doing this in a impactful and rewarding way by focusing and prioritising the areas where they can deliver the most impact.

This in turn supports increased incomes and the overall long-term resilience of the farms, protecting future livelihoods and local industry.

These social initiatives from ESG build supplier loyalty and long lasting relationships with communities, helping with resilience in value chains. In turn these initiatives also build trust and confidence with consumers that Unilever is a business that does good, building brand loyalty and adding to its competitive advantage.
