I was looking at different subjects suggested under the Curriculum and Standards for 2nd and 3rd grade and one that stood out was Presidential Elections. I feel like I didn't learn much about the election process or voting until I was quite a bit older. In the classroom I currently work in, we talked briefly about the voting process back in November and did a Cookie Voting Poll and the kids really seemed to enjoy it, so I thought this was an important topic that can be expanded on in fun ways to catch kids attention.

Affordances: This book does a great job of breaking down what the election is, comparing it to student government to help kids relate to the information. It also has really interesting illustrations and some fun facts spread throughout

Limitations: This book is pretty wordy despite having less than 50 pages. I think it would serve better to utilize some of the pages and make a presentation or break it down in smaller parts and read it in portions as a hand out rather than students reading it individually.

Affordances: This book does a great job of describing the importance of the democratic process and how we can impact our country by voting. The book shows the animals being unhappy with their leadership, deciding to protest, choosing to have an election and shows the candidates campaigning for votes.

Limitations: This book is a very generalized example of the election process. I think this would work great as supplemental material but follow up information is required to expand on the information.

Affordances: This website has many different resources that go over topics including Civics & Democracy, Elections Basics, How Voting Works, Voting Rights, News & Current Issues, Media in Elections, and Civic Participation. These resources range from Videos, Media Galleries, Interactive Lessons and Interactive Maps. These resources could be utilized in many different ways in the classroom. There is also an option to share to Google Classroom if you utilize that in your classroom.

Limitations: The resources could be boring for students. There was a link listed below that said for students Pre-K-2nd Grade called You, Me & Community that featured similar, although more brief, topics and utilized PBS Kids Shows and Media. I would probably utilize that despite it being recommended for 2nd grade, not 3rd. I will link that below as well.
