Extended ideas of poetry: 

Sort of like a story but not as clearly explained - the reader needs to make inferences to complete the poem.

Poems don't have to have a beginning middle and end or a problem and a solution.

Poems can be just words  arranged- not full sentence but they need a connection.
Poems have a format which adds to the meaning of them. 

They don't need to make sense

Can have made up words in them.

poems can have a different format

Extended ideas:
Sometimes the poems talk about one thing but really they are meaning another thing like in haikus when they talk about landscapes or weather but they mean feelings.

They put human feelings into non-human things (personification)

and say something IS something but thats not real like death at every window (this is a reference to The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes, in which he uses the metaphor of  'death at every window' to describe the soldiers and their guns.)

Poems can just be for fun or they can tell us feelings about the author.

Sometimes poems can be called verse. 

Poetry writing can be made when you include poetic devices, and you can use as many as you like. 

The format of a poem can help the words become a poem, like if you wanted to write a poem about a worm you could make the words look like a worm.

Simile
Alliteration
Assonance
Onomatopoeia
Repetition
Rhyme
Meter
