Gulab jamun is a popular and very sweet, Indian dessert. It is often served as either a dessert to have after dinner or used as a platter at events for people to pick at. During my cousin’s weddings at the events to the lead up of the actual wedding, Gulab jamun was often one of the foods that would was set out for people to enjoy and eat during them. Due to my family being Anglo Indian, meaning I am half Indian and half Australian, the people at the events were mixed with Indian and Australian people. For the Australian people it was an interesting and new experience for them to try Indian delights such as Gulab jamun. It is a traditional Indian sweet.

For myself I found the standard 12.3 adhered to me the most, it is the standard that requires/ reminds clinicians to be ethical and professional when working with individuals from refugee/ migrant backgrounds. It means respecting people’s cultural beliefs, dignity, and keeping them safe. I have improved my understanding of being / performing as a professional regarding when it comes to looking after refugees due to domain 7 teaching me to be respectful of their privacy, understanding their culture and beliefs and providing a safe and comfortable environment. Due to learning cultural competency I feel as though I am going to be a lot more aware and culturally sensitive when working with refugees and migrants. This skill is essential for me in future workplaces as I can develop an understanding of different beliefs and traditions.

Education:
Education has a significant impact on refugees in Australia. Many struggle with education in Australia as they had limited education in their country of origin. If it wasn't already hard enough to learn with language barriers, refugees often have to experience racism and discrimination, further challenging their access to quality education. Often refugees will have additional responsibilities regarding supporting their families, making it difficult to attend school regularly.

Food insecurity:
Due to refugees in Australia having limited financial resources and are generally on low income, there is often a struggle to afford and access nutritious food along with the costs of daily living. This can lead to malnutrition and compromised overall well-being. This food insecurity can also increase their vulnerability to developing chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes etc.

Housing, basic amenities and environment:
There is limited access to affordable housing for refugees in Australia. When housing options are unaffordable and/ or scarce many refugees are forced to live together in overcrowded conditions. Beside the obvious fact that they have no privacy amongst each other and they live in substandard conditions, there is also the fact that overcrowding increases individuals risk of health issues. This is due to the overcrowding making it easier for diseases to spread from one another.

(WHO. (2023). Social Determinants of Health.

Oral health:
Upon arrival to Australia, it is common for refugees to have issues regarding oral health, which can include dental caries, missing teeth, and periodontal disease etc. In their country of origin there may already be bad oral health due to malnutrition and poor access to dental care. Then post-arrival in Australia bad oral health can continue due to a limited understanding of Australian dental services as well as the high availability to low cost sugar rich foods. Treatment is firstly referring to a public dental service for review and then following up by providing them with basic information about oral hygiene such as; brushing their teeth twice daily, flossing and importance of a healthy diet etc.

Immunization:
When arriving to Australia, refugees are often at significant risk of being unimmunized due to their forced migration experience. Even if they are immunized, Source country immunizations schedules are different to Australian immunization schedules, meaning no one will ever arrive fully vaccinated to Australia's standard. Australia provides a catch up immunization programs which immunizes refugees equivalent to that of an Australia-born individual.

Skin infections:
When travelling to Australia refugees and immigrants face many challenges which include inadequate sanitation where the skin is weakened and therefore more likely to harbor bacteria and fungi that can cause skin infections, such as Tinea. Stress from travelling can also weaken the immune system making it harder for the body to fight infection. When treating skin infections it depends on the diagnosis and area of origin but for example to treat tinea, Topical therapy such as terbinafine 1% will be administered and to use daily for one week.

(Quick navigation.

Health means a variety of things to me. It means to be physically, mentally and spiritually happy. It means going to the gym a couple times a week whilst eating food that makes me happy. Health is me being the happiest, most confident version of myself but also accepting and being proud of the version of myself that has bad days. Health is having a good relationship with my friends and family and being proud of my Indian heritage.
