Before discussing about child labor, I thought that all companies of cosmetic products consider about the process of getting each ingredient to produce their products. But during class in week 3, I found that one of the ingredients that has been used in cosmetic products such as lip gloss, blusher and others is MICA which children are being used to dig the mine to get the mica. Mica is a mineral that used in cosmetic products to create glittering, shimmering outcome. It impacted me because children are supposed to be studying instead of working and eat proper meal to be healthy and they should be in a safe environment. For example, in Jharkhand, India, children work to help their family to get minerals such as mica, gold and others so that they can sell them to get money to buy food. Therefore, their safety is being threatened because they do not have enough equipment and it is very dangerous to dig the mine. This reminds me of what I have learnt in UNGS1301 about an ideology which is capitalism which the poor people work for rich people just for the sake of profit and rich people ignore peoples’ needs which results in wealth inequality and does not promote equal opportunity. As the saying goes, ‘the rich people getting richer while the poor people getting poorer’.

As a result of my reflection, after this, I will look through first in any cosmetic products’ ingredients before purchase it and will not support any high-profile brands that use mica. Moreover, I will spread awareness to others about the importance to against child labor because child labor is not something that we can take lightly.

This is because, in class my teacher once asked, ‘What something that is Sejahtera but at the same time its not Sejahtera?”. That is when I answered BMF as one of it. This is because, BMF was created with the purpose to encourage Muslim buyers to prioritize the purchase of Muslim products, because of emerging issues such as non-Muslims who were not respected Muslims on food production issues. The BMF campaign was not aimed at boycotting non-Muslim products but rather focusing on quality products guaranteed by Muslims based on the halal concept. The bonding between Muslims might be strengthen through this campaign but how about with Non-Muslims? It impacted me because we can see today, Muslims are too engrossed with the campaign until it created disharmonious with the Non-Muslims and it leads to racism. Racism is the belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or superior to one another. It is okay if Muslim sellers want to promote halal products but if they are trying to promote such products using contentious issues between races, it is not healthy.

As a result of my reflection, after this, I will support both sellers whether the sellers are Muslims or Non-Muslims by purchasing their products as long as it is Halal because there are still Non-Muslims who sell Halal products. Besides, I will try to change people’s perceptions of the BMF and explain to them the real purpose for which the BMF was created and how it works so that misunderstandings and issues of disharmony and racism can be reduced. Allah SWT has stated in Surah Al-Mumtahanah, verse 8 "Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly." It impacted in a way because to be sustainable, the measure should be the three pillars where the first pillar is economy pillar, the second pillar is environment pillar and last but not least is social pillar. I gave an example, at Mahallah Zaid Bin Harithah IIUM Pagoh, there is a cafe named "Bumbo Kita". Of course, the cafe put the profit as their measure when they sell their foods and beverages. But, it does not make sense when they do not put fix price for their foods. For instance, at times, they sell fried chicken at RM3 and at other time they sell it at RM4. Also sometimes they charge for rice at RM1.50 even though we do not take it that much. From the economy pillar it might be good because they can get the money to cover up their capital back and at the same time they get lot of profits, but how about from environment? They use plastics a lot to pack the foods and beverages and use plastic containers to pack the rice. As we know plastic is very hard to dispose and it contains substances that can harm the environment. And from the social pillar, it can create disharmonious between the cafe's owner and the students because dissatisfaction about the price. This shows that, my guesses all this time are wrong about prioritise profit is okay than other things. To be sustainable, we have to look from all perspectives without being overlooked. 

What action that I took is I made a poster about measure that we should use in order to be sustainable to give awareness and little knowledges to my followers who do not know what measure that they should take in consideration before they make any action. Moreover, I spread it on social media such as Instagram. In addition, I got some feedbacks from the followers (can refer below).

A lot of pollutions that happened today is not because other things but its from ourselves, our own hand. For example, we still use plastic bags when we go to the grocery which we know that it could harm the earth. Dont we act ignorance then? Allah has stated in Surah Ar-Rum verse 41, "Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness]. (41)" For me, to prioritise profit (economy pillar) is okay, but it has to be in line with other pillars also and does not harm any pillars.
