"The next time they visited, Brian's head was wrapped in a dirty white bandage with dried bloodstains. Mom said he had fallen off the back of the couch and cracked his head open on the floor, but she and Dad had decided not to take him to the hospital."
I chose this quote because it gives you an example off how the Walls family was not like any other family. Most people would have taken their kids to the hospital right away if their kids head cracked open, but not the Walls. Instead they use the excuse that Brian's head is hard and hurt the floor more than his head.

"Mom gave us a snort of a laugh. "So the trouble you kids got into with Billy Deel was actually a blessing in disguise," she said."
I chose this quote because Jeannette's mom was showing order and calmness through the chaos of what had happened only hours before. The problems the kids had caused turned into an adventure they could enjoy orderly.

"When other girls came in and threw away their lunch bags in the garbage pails, I'd go retrieve them."
I chose this quote because Jeannette was able to find a way to get food when her parents couldn't provide here any. She took her life into her own hands

"I dreamed of the desert and the sun and the big house in Phoenix... It was ours, the one true home we'd ever had. "Are we ever going home?" I asked Dad one day. "This is home now."
I chose this quote because her fantasy was living in Phoenix with her perfect house in the desert, but her reality is the crumbling house with terrible conditions.

"Dad, please come, we need you!" I hollered. Lori and Brian and Mom and Maureen all chimed in. "We need you!"
I chose this quote because the family forgave the dad for what he had done because them being together was more important. They let go of all the wrong for love.

"... when Christmas came that year, we had no money at all. On Christmas Eve, Dad took each of us kids out into the desert night one by one... "Pick out your favorite star," Dad said that night... He said it was my Christmas present."
I chose this quote because it shows how much Rex actually loved his kids. Even though he couldn't afford a physical gift he still wanted to give them something so they didn't feel unloved or less important than the other kids. He gave them a present they could keep with themselves forever and never lose it.
