It has ancestors that lived with the dinosaurs and they are known to be called the “Living Fossil”. The shark lives or can be caught at depths of 1,570 -5,105 ft. It was found in Japan at 160-660 ft. They can also be found around Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia, West Africa, Chile or the Caribbean, Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. The Frilled Shark has hydrocarbon and oil filled livers that make them float or hover in waters of 160-660 ft deep so they aren’t seen at the surface much at all . The length of the shark can reach 6.6 feet or more with the female being the larger of the species. Its color is dark brown and looks like an eel. The sharks mouth is lined with 25 rows of backward facing, triangular shaped teeth to include 300! Its scientific name is (Chamydoselachus anguineus) which means in Latin (snake like). Its name comes from the frilly or fringed look of its six pairs of gill slits. Fisherman’s nets are the biggest threat to the Frilled Shark because they get caught in them and die. They also are affected by the pollutants in the waters along with the climate change which makes the waters unstable for them. As a result of their natural rarity, these fish are rarely seen by humans.They are listed by the World Conservation Union as a near threatened species. The diet of the Frilled Shark is squid, cuttlefish, octopus and other sharks. Because they live so far beneath the surface, the water is freezing cold and makes the sharks swim slower. No The Frilled Shark hunt its prey before but scientists think that it uses it’s back fins to propel itself towards its prey then attack with its mouth and all 300 of its teeth. The Frilled Sharks gestation period is 3 ½ years long and a study done in Japan showed the sharks breed all year round. The sharks usually have anywhere between 2 and 15 babies but usually about 6 pups in their litter.
