Addiction as a disease

Currently, many programs are based on looking at addiction like a disease. The 12 step theory to recovery is the basis of addiction as a disease and the steps to get cured. The changes to the brain incurred by heavy drug use do not disappear when an addict stops using, and this results in the frequency of relapse among addicts which makes this the hardest part about truly getting rid of this disease. Addiction s a disease and is hard to get rid of making it equally important to not become an addict in the first place.

Addicts are usually medicated during treatment but there is no recipe or specific medicine you take to get off your addiction to a specific drug. For some 🤬, you can take medicine but for others no medication is offered.

For addiction to 🤬, Amantadine is often prescribed. Amantadine increases dopamine activity in the brain attempting to mimic the feeling 🤬 gives you. Unfortunately, it has many side effects and because of this they are trying to develop a vaccine for 🤬. The thought is that antibodies inside the vaccine could stop the flow to the brain to prevent the high that would normally be felt.

For addiction to opiods, a few different 🤬 are used. Naltrexone is a drug used to block the receptors for heroin users so they do not get the "high". Sometime it is unaffective and found unpleasant by the receivers. Methadone is the most effective drug for heroin. It causes you to get addicted to it and it has a much lesser effect on you then heroin does.
Medication is sometimes the way to treat addiction but it is not always successful.

Along with different programs and techniques to help you quit there are several treatment centers out there with different methods as in to help you fight off your addiction.
A common method at treatment centers is for patients to stay in the center for 10 days to a month receive support from the staff and detoxify in an environment where the drug is not present in anyone you are around. This is known as the Minnesota Model.

Similar to the Minnesota model, are halfway houses. These are much less expensive and you only receive treatment at night although it is much less focused than the prior one.

The next step down from a halfway house would be is the oxford house treatment program. People trying to fight off their drug addiction live together and encourage each other to remain clean and sober. They try to keep each other honest and on the right track.

A drug never takes over every part of your body even when you become addicted. If you would like to quit, you can choose to quit and follow through. A good example of this is smokers who have stopped smoking even though they were addicted to nicotine.

There are many programs out there for you to help you quit. The RR believes that self empowerment through abstinence is a very important tool in helping you quit. Empowering yourself to not do the drug will always be your choice no matter if you are addicted or not it is still your choice every time you CHOOSE to abuse this drug.

This is just one technique and program out of many options and techniques that can help you quit if you would like to.

Experts have begun to thimk the root causes of addiction come from social dysfunction.

Many addicts are seen to have come from low income and equally low oppurtunity families.

Stopping drug abuse of any kind begins with making the life of an addict better in every facet so they will not have any reason to abuse the drug as they enjoy the life they live without the drug in their system. Not allowing addicts to feel the misery and hopelessness which has been seen the people who later become addicts.
