Les spécialistes ont divisé la Préhistoire en un grand nombre d’époques. Il faut en retenir deux:

Le Paléolithique (ancien âge de la pierre’ appelé aussi âge de la pierre taillée). L’homme est un chasseur-cueilleur. Il est nomade. Il apprend a fabriquer des outils(et des instruments de musique).

Le Néolithique (nouvel âge de la pierre appelé aussi âge de la pierre polie). Il y a 10 000 ans (fin de la dernière glaciation), l’homme se sédentarise: il vit de l’élevage et de l’agriculture.

La fonction de divertissement reste dans le domaine de la musique une conception occidentale récente.

Pour les hommes préhistorique, à l’instar de nombreuses cultures contemporaines la musique a bien d’autres fonctions.

Elle peut servir à communiquer avec l’au delà. Elle peut servir à la magie, à communiquer avec des esprits ou pour des rituels de passage.

Dans de nombreuses cultures elle favorise la transe du chaman.
