Kid President/Pep-Talk to Students and Teachers

Chapter 3 in this book covers how teachers can be culturally relevant. It focuses on the different ways we as teachers can make ourselves more culturally aware. In this video, Kid President takes the time to give a pep talk to both teachers and students. In the beginning it's mainly directed at fellow classmates, but approximately at 2:01 he proposes a question to teachers: "What are you teaching the world?" It hit me, what are we teaching the world? Are we being culturally relevant when we teach? Does it even really cross our minds when we're in the classroom, or do we just put it in the back of our heads?

Color Blind

On page 35 of The Dream-keepers, Billings talks about this idea of "dysconscious racism". This is where people will claim that they are color blind or that they don't "see color" to try to be helpful. In the end though, they are actually just creating another issue. Now these individuals are "accepting the given as the inevitable". This video talks about this issue.

Dress To Impress!

In Billings' book, on page 39, Billings wrote about an interview that she held with a woman named Pauline Dupree. This was a young African American woman who was going in to interview for a job opening at a school. When she went to the school she made the following comments about the current (white) employees. She said "They come in here dressed like people going to scrub somebody's kitchen. I mean what kind of a message do you send the children when you don't care enough to put on clean, pressed clothes?" We as teachers must remember that are kids are looking at us all the time. We need to be dressed to impress so they know that we care about our profession! This video goes over appropriate teacher attire.

On page 64 of The Dream-keepers, there is a section titled "We're All In This Together". Hence, the classic High School Musical song! In this section of the book it talks about the importance of cooperative learning. This is where students are encouraged to learn from one another, or just to learn together. We're all able to help each other out every once in a while.

The Freedom Writers

The Dream-Keepers has a central theme around being culturally relevant. Erin Gruwell is one of the best examples of a culturally relevant teacher. She is the one depicted in the famous movie "Freedom Writers". Gruwell demonstrated a connection with each of her students. She was aware of the different cultures. She didn't ignore the differences. She was almost a cookie cutter fit of the perfect teacher, which is why I chose the trailer of the Freedom Writers movie to celebrate her as a culturally relevant teacher.
