Students are reluctant to share anything in the restorative circle or are just not interested. I give them whiteboards to draw or write their answers down on but they don’t like to say what they wrote or share anything. How can I encourage more communication in the circle?

The students are extremely reluctant as previously mentioned to share. From my observations, they would rather be on the phone than have an actual conversation with their peers our teachers. Alot of students have mentioned that they feel forced to share and that they are uncomfortable.

Alternative Options

I did some light research on the topic when we were first asked to do these because I had no idea what it was, and I found a few options for when students don't want to share. Most days we have a 60-70% participation rate. The few that don't share as much seem to be the same group but I would love ideas that make them feel like they can still contribute that they are comfortable with. This was one link I found, and one idea I like is moving to alternate locations for circles. Is this possible?

Would the use of technology deminish the authenicity of the circle? I recall when on zoom, during the hight of Covid, that sudents not showing thier image often express themselves without feeling ashamed if they were incorrector an opposing view. Not saying that is a great solution but I believe the students may feel comfortable initially .

Students are unwilling to share anything below surface level because they do not want to be judge by their peers. They are often too tired in the morning to want to participate. I will say that for me, it really depends on who is there that day. I have a few "mean" girls in my group and when they are absent, my chat is amazing. Also, when you don't teach some of the kids everyday it is really hard to get to know eachother when block scheduling is so infrequent.
