As the head of Abakan, Inc., in South Florida, Robert Miller leads a number of innovation-focused ventures, including Battery Metals, Inc., and MesoCoat, Inc. Reflecting his background with Abakan, Robert Miller has particular knowledge of the cleantech sphere, including energy storage and solar energy.

Florida International University was recently in the news for its new solar parking canopy, which has a 1.4-megawatt capacity. The installation provides valuable research data to utilities such as Florida Power and Light (FPL) for use in optimizing the state’s power grid.

Almost a decade ago, FPL became a sustainable energy pioneer when it oversaw construction of a state-mandated DeSoto County solar power plant. At the time, it was the largest such facility in the United States. FPL has since set in motion ongoing efforts to significantly expand its solar capacities through the creation of eight solar plants.

Comprising 2.5 million panels, the plants will generate enough energy to provide electricity to some 120,000 homes. This capacity should come online by 2018 and is amplified by an FPL commitment to creating an additional 1,500 megawatts of solar power.

The former chief executive officer of Abakan, Inc., where he oversaw the acquisition of MesoCoat, a steel coating company, Robert Miller is a business leader with more than 30 years of experience. Since leaving Abakan, Robert Miller has served as the CEO of Solar Avenir, Inc., an investor in technologies that work to make solar energy more accessible and efficient.

In particular, Solar Avenir recognizes that the scarcity of lithium leads to increased costs in developing solar energy storage. This is why the firm seeks to drive research into alternative battery technologies, such as sodium-ion batteries.

Although possibly the future of solar energy storage, sodium-ion battery technology must advance, particularly regarding its life cycle and working potential. To facilitate research into this technology, Solar Avenir is negotiating with one of the world’s leading solar energy battery scientists with the aim of funding the scientist’s work in the sodium-ion battery sector. Solar Avenir hopes to increase the practical and commercial viability of this alternate technology and bring a low-cost solar energy storage solution to the market within three years.

Nevada Increases Energy Storage Requirements

Robert Miller is a well-established Miami entrepreneur who leads Abakan, Inc., and has acquired companies such as MesoCoat, Inc., which offers surface engineering solutions. Robert Miller has a longstanding interest in the clean technology sphere and follows trends that impact Abakan in areas such as solar and energy storage.

Change is occurring rapidly in Nevada. The state recently revised its renewable energy targets and provided the Public Utilities Commission with the authority to investigate a potential energy storage procurement requirement. This decision will be made before October 2018 and will involve consideration of complex economic and environmental criteria. If implemented, this will make Nevada the fourth state in the United States to create such a renewables-focused policy. California was a pioneer in this arena and has benefited through economic growth and technology advancement.

In addition, Nevada passed B206, which sets renewable portfolio standards (RPS) of 25 percent by 2025 and 40 percent by 2030. The RPS requirement favors qualified energy storage devices, as every delivered kilowatt/hour of energy is counted double towards meeting RPS requirements. Nevada has taken a major step forward in re-orienting its energy supply and economy towards a sustainability footing.

A financial executive with experience across a variety of sectors, Robert Miller has held leadership roles with Abakan, Prosper Financial, and Crystallex International Corporation. As CEO of Abakan from 2010 to 2016, Robert Miller financed the acquisition of MesoCoat, a steel-coating company. In his free time, he enjoys watching his favorite National Basketball Association (NBA) player, LeBron James.

Despite earning hundreds of millions of dollars in salary throughout his 14-year NBA career, James has been preparing for life away from basketball for many years. He was an early investor in Cannondale and Beats Electronics and signed a lifetime deal with Nike, which is reportedly worth upwards of $1 billion. In 2012, James began investing in Blaze Pizza, a new fast-food chain. He now owns 17 franchises and more than 10 percent of the company.

His confidence in the company has paid off significantly, as Blaze opened its 200th restaurant on July 11, 2017. In the span of four years, the company went from two to 200 franchises, which represents the fastest start ever among United States-based fast-food chains. It recently finished second on a Harris Poll of the best pizza chains in the country, ahead of restaurants like Pizza Hut, which has 7,000 locations nationwide.
