         <description><![CDATA[<div>China ranked 91st in the world HDI rankings in 2014.&nbsp;<br>GDP Per capita: $6,497.50<br>China has great access to most raw materials, but some regions make it difficult to actually get to the resources and transport them to the market. Investments in education accounts for 4% of the GDP. They have a nine-year education law. They also send more students abroad than any country in the world. Schools in Shanghai are sending teachers from the top schools to those in the rural areas to increase scores.          <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1949 Mao Zedong, head of the Communist Party, establishes the People's Republic of China. Rivals belonging to the Nationalist Party move to Taiwan, off China's eastern coast.&nbsp;<br><br>Between 1958 and 1961 Mao's plan to change China's economy and farming system fails. Millions of people die of starvation. This took a major hit to china's economy.<br><br>In 1989 about 1 million students hold pro-democracy protests in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. The uprising is crushed by the army.<br><br>In 1997 China regains control of Hong Kong, which had been under British rule. Though it is a part of china it still does not have a Communist outlook to it.<br><br>In 2008 china host the Olympics.
