Harper Lee- Mollie, Samantha, Christina, Gracen

Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama. She was a tomboy who didn't have many friends except for Truman Capote. Her father was a lawyer and her mom had a mental sickness so she rarely left the house. She attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery and she focused on her studies and writing. She then transferred to University of Alabama and there she tried to be social and join a sorority. Because of her interest in writing, she helped with the school newspaper. She was then accepted into the University's Law School. But then she decided that she wanted to be a writer and went to University of Oxford as an exchange student over the summer. She went back to law school that fall but soon dropped out and moved North to peruse her writing career. She met Michael Martin Brown who financially supported her so she could become a writer for her full time job. He found an agent Maurice Crain who led Harper to publish her J.B. Lippincott Company. She worked with an editor Tay Hohoff to make To Kill a Mockingbird. The book was published in July 1960 and become so popular it was created into a film in 1962. After her death, a Broadway version of To Kill a Mockingbird was created to honor her and her book. On February 19, 2016, she had a stroke and passed away.

Kirstie, Aadya, Megan- The Great Depression

The Great Depression started on 29, October, 1929, which is also known as Black Tuesday. It was the highest trading volume of the day of the Wall Street Crash of 1929 on the New York Stock Exchange. America's involvement in WW2 had a significant impact on the economy and workforce of the US. Their involvement in WW2 changed the rate of unemployment by decreasing it. Fast forward to 1933, Franklin Roosevelt was inaugurated as president. He and his administration helped reconstruct the economy. Then there was a New Deal, which was a series of program and financial reforms that were enacted by the current president. It responded to the recovery of the Great Depression and produced a political realignment in America. The Dust Bowl occurred simultaneously in Mid Western and Southern plains and caused dust storms and drought due to the clearing of land. With all of this information, we predicted that the setting of To Kill a Mockingbird would look something like this: People's houses wouldn't have food, and any new buildings would be shabby for the lack of resources.

The Scottsboro Boys - Ryan Chen, Isabella Freeman, Peace Lu

The Scottsboro Boys were a group of black teenagers who wasted their time causing trouble. They were placed in a trial due to getting into a fight and accused of rape. Their original trial took place in Alabama on January 1932. Being in Alabama affected the outcome of their trial because Alabama has a law that rules out the 14th amendment, so one of them should not have been tried as an adult. The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) decided not to help the Scottsboro Boys, because they were concerned about the damage that might affect them. However, seeing as an opportunity for recruitment, the Communist party decided to aid the Scottsboro Boys. During the trial, the defense lawyers were biased and racist. However, in the end, they were not pardoned of their convictions.

The Jim Crow laws segregated blacks and whites from each other. They were only segregated in the South. So they tried to escape to the North, using the underground railroad. They had different bathrooms, they had to use different drinking fountains, and the blacks couldn’t vote. Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois played an important role in taking action. One was a civil rights leader and the other was an activist.

Caleb, Kevin, Eric, Johnathon, and Michael - Growing Up White/Black in the 1930s

According to “Growing up White in the 1930s", a “good family”, by the definition of the three white ladies, meant that the household would include a maid, a cook, a nurse, a farmer, and a yardman. Good families would have a bit of money, all faithful Christians, and have a father who was employed. According to Mrs. Barge from “Growing Up Black in the 1930s,'' a good black family would have a house and a decent garden to plant crops. The family would try to be self-sufficient and try to purchase very little. All three ladies interviewed in “Growing up White in the 1930s” came from a “good family”, as Camille and Mary-Ann came from a farming family, and Cecil came from the city. There were both differences and similarities with a black and white “good family”. A similarity was that the fathers of both families were employed, and the difference was that the black family was considered poor while the white families were able to afford maids, cooks, and nurses. African-American women had limitations for employment, as they could only be domestic workers, nurses, teachers, and cooks. This was done so that black women would still be perceived as servants. This made Mrs. Barge think that white people were proud and that they were taking advantage of black people.
