Example 1: Slim to George

page 107, "Never you mind, a guy got to sometimes" Slim says. Slim shows compassion by saying that he understands what George was thinking. George would rather have Lennie die quickly rather than be tortured or have a painful death. Slim understands that George was showing compassion for Lennie. George was telling Lennie about how they were gonna buy a farm, and how Lennie could tend the rabbits. Therefore, Slim shows compassion to George by almost telling him that he would've done the same thing.

Example 2: George for candy

page 94, " You an' me can get that little place, can't we George? You an' me can go there an' live nice, can't we, George? Can't we?" Candy says. George shows compassion by not shooting Candy's dream of having the American dream. George knows it would be very challenging to achieve the "American Dream", however he just says that he will earn 50 bucks in a month. He doesn't tell Candy that its impossible, he dodges the question

Example 3: Boss/society to Crooks

Page 68,"Why ain't you wanted? " Lennie asked. "Cause I'm black. They play cards in there, but I can't play because I'm black. They say I stink. Well, I tell you, all of you stink to me." The boss makes Crooks live in the bard all by himself with the animals. The boss and the other workers discriminate against Crooks because of his race. They all lack compassion towards Crooks. Because they lack compassion, Crooks feels left out and would jump at any opportunity to leave.

page 44, 'god awmighty, that dog stinks. Get him outta here, Candy! I don't know nothing that stinks as bad as an old dog. You gotta get him out." When Candy was told he should shoot his dog because it was old and stinky, it wasn't any good to him or the dog. Carlson said. Eventually Carlson persuades Candy, and his dog is shot at the back of the head. This is similar to Marley, in the movie 'Marley and Me' Marley gets sick, and surgery cannot help him. The doctor suggests that it would be better if he was put down, so Marley would no longer have a painful death. He would be with his owner, who loves him.

Like Curley's wife or Crooks, I can sometimes relate to their feeling of loneliness, when people have a lack of compassion. Example: page 68:"Why ain't you wanted? " Lennie asked. "Cause I'm black. They play cards in there, but I can't play because I'm black. They say I stink. Well, I tell you, all of you stink to me."
