For the cross-country skier Martin Moeller, the most difficult thing about cross country skiing isn't the intense training or the freezing cold, it's the eating. Research has shown that a typical male elite cross-country skier must consume 7,000 to 8,000 calories a day (more than three times the caloric needs of an average male) to meet the energy demands of the sport. Female elite skiers must eat about 3,500 to 4,000 calories a day (about double the calories consumed by the average woman)

Diggins accelerated into another gear on her third lap, as she passed Norwegian skier Maiken Caspersen Falla and then out-sprinted Sweden’s Stina Nilsson to the finish line. Then, as she beat individual sprint gold medalist Nilsson to the line, she screamed and the celebration began. The 42 year long drought was ended as the U.S. won gold.

The training for a cross country skiers is very extraneous and long. The main parts of the body that you must strengthen are your legs and your core. These parts of the body are what keeps you going. Endurance is also very important, you have to be able to travel far distances without becoming tired. All this training is a huge opportunity cost for skiers.
