The theme is often portrayed to not make rash decisions and not to let others influence how you make your choices. In this scene, Polonius and Laertes force Ophelia to not engage with Hamlet, even if he claims to love her. Ophelia has no other option but to obey them. This diminishes her independence and makes her world a lot smaller. 

"For Hamlet, and the trifling of his favor, Hold it a fashion and a toy in blood, A violet in the youth of primy nature, Forward not permanent, Sweet not, lasting." Laertes trying to convince Ofelia to not date Hamlet.

This quotes modern day translation would be something like “many can listen but few can speak” And “keep your thoughts to yourself “ which are both important moral lessons Shakespeare included in scene 3. These lessons are still important and still used today.

Polonius also goes on to say it is important to be true to yourself and true to others. As he does, he cautions his sister Ophelia to not fall for Hamlet who is far above her status to love her. He believes Hamlet's position in the state makes it impossible for him to marry her. Polonius enters the house and givers his farewells to Laertes. He tells Laertes to not make any rash decisions and to take care of himself. When Laertes leaves, Polonius then asked his daughter about her relationship with Hamlet. She tells her father that Hamlet claimed to love her. Polonius sternly repeats what Laertes said earlier and forbids Ophelia to engage with Hamlet. He tells her Hamlet "blinded" her with his love and she would see the false side of Hamlet. Ophelia listens and obeys the words from her father and brother.

As opposed to the pseudo-family of Claudius, Gertrude and Hamlet, Polonius’ family seems to actually respect each other and their feelings. He appears to be very protective of Ophelia, as he does not want her to interact with Prince Hamlet because he believes the prince is childish and unable to commit to Ophelia.

Laertes: Son of Polonius, brother to Ophelia. Along with Polonius, he seems to actually care about his sister’s feelings towards Hamlet. He also warns her of Hamlet’s childish behavior and inability to commit to her, just like his father believes.

Ophelia: Daughter of Polonius, sister to Laertes, and Prince Hamlet’s love interest. She appears very dependent on her father and brother, being unable to make choices on her own.
