         <title>KWL Chart</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>What I <strong>know </strong><br>What I <strong>want</strong> to know<br>What I <strong>learned<br><br>KWL charts</strong> are graphic organizers used to help students organize their thoughts and learning before, during and after a lesson (Facing History and Ourselves, n.d.). KWL charts help students reflect on their learning and remember what they need to know. They can also be used as study materials at the end of a unit.<br><br><strong>Justification - <br></strong>Students can easily make a KWL chart on a blank sheet of paper by drawing three columns. This strategy can be used in any subject. A great time to use a KWL chart would be during a social studies lesson on the Mayflower. Students will write down what they know about the Mayflower before reading and what they want to know after. After the lesson students can reflect on what they learned in the third column.          <title>Inquiry Based Learning</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In <strong>inquiry based learning </strong>students learn through doing instead of memorizing or listening to lectures. Inquiry based learning gives students an active role in the learning process (Grade Power Learning, 2018). Students are more likely to remember what they are learning through engaging with it. The teacher asks questions to lead the students to discovery.<br><br><strong>Justification - </strong><br>In the fourth grade classroom inquiry based learning could be utilized through different projects. Students are given different countries to research in Social Studies and encouraged to discover the different characteristics of another culture. They could make a presentation on the foods, professions and traditions of the Latino culture found in Nicaragua. Inquiry based learning strategies like projects are a better option than students taking notes during a lecture over various cultures.<br><br>Grade Power Learning. (2018).          <title>Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br><strong>DRTA</strong> could fall under the metacognition umbrella but is more complex and a great strategy to help students improve their skills. DRTA enhances reading comprehension by making students think as they read (Reading Rockets, n.d.). <br><br>First teachers <strong>direct </strong>students through open-ended questions about the text they are about to read. Students are encouraged to make predictions based off the title and other things they can see with out reading the book.<br><br>Second, students <strong>read</strong> up to the first stopping point the teacher has chosen.<br><br>Third, students go back through the section they just read and <strong>think</strong> about the predictions they made before reading.<br><br><strong>Justification - </strong><br>DRTA is a great strategy for fourth graders. The above steps could easily be done during ELAR time as students read a book such as "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs."          <title>Metacognition</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Metacognition</strong> is when students think about their thinking (Benchmark Education, n.d.). Metacognition helps students to start taking responsibility for their learning. This is an important skill for students to practice from a young age that will help them over the course of their academic careers. Metacognition is teacher led by giving students the opportunity and tools to think about their learning. Students will reflect on how they are improving on different academic skills such as word problems in math or their grammar skills while writing. <br><br><strong>Justification - </strong><br>At the beginning of the school year students will identify their learning style. Students will take a quiz to find out if they are a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner. They will then be given techniques to utilize their learning style and be encouraged to use them during assignments and studying. When possible students can be given options for showing mastery of a lesson according to their style of learning. Some students may choose to build a model while others would like to write an essay. During ELAR lessons students are given a list of questions to help them monitor their reading as they go through an assigned chapter. This can be as simple as pausing after every other page and asking, "Do I understand what I just read?"<br><br>Benchmark Education. (n.d.).          <title>Cooperative Learning </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In <strong>cooperative learning</strong> students are broken up into groups that work together towards a common goal (Zook, 2018). The purpose is for learners to discover new concepts and teach it to one another. After giving each group a topic the teachers job is to ensure students stay on task in their groups. <br><br><strong>Justification - </strong><br>After a short teacher led discussion on different ecosystems and their organisms, students will be divided up into groups of 4. Each student will be asked to research a different ecosystem for 30 minutes and then present their findings to the class. The different ecosystems for groups to research are tundra, grassland, coral reef, desert and rain forest. The teacher will walk around to monitor students and ensure they are on task and moving in the right direction. Students will present on the weather, physical characteristics, and organisms found in their ecosystem.<br><br>Zook, C. (2018).
