I used Angry Birds, Frozen and Minecraft in one of my classrooms this year for the Code week event (code.org, Programma il Futuro). I think these are useful tools to introduce the idea of algorithm, the concept of loops and so on. But I don't know how to use for math learning. Math is much more. Maybe for some specific topics. In general I think that having fun while learning is very important and these resources are useful in this perspective.

I know that Minecraft is a popular children's game and I have heard my students talk about it and how they watch mindcraft games on youtube but I have never tried my hand at it let alone it use it in the Maths class. To do that, I need first to familiarise myself with how it works and then create my own lessons to serve my intended aims. But I wouldn't use it all the time as I am a bit sceptical as to how my students would respond. Of course, they are going to be more engaged since they are familiar with minecraft but I don't know how far I will be able to keep them concentrated on the mathematical idea rather than on the play itself. Yet, it is certainly a great advantage for us teachers to be able to variate our classes and avoid monotonhy and boredom.

Maybe it's appropriate for younger students. I don't think I'll try it in my classes with 15-18 year olds.

I use the example of a grocery store to explain my students the concept of a function! I use
the prices of fruits, the quantity and the according cost as a means to explain to them the
term of the independent and non-independent value! Also in this way i found it easier to
explain them how to identify a function.

With Minecraft, you can recreate any building on a scale, applying its knowledge in mathematics and geometry. Minicraft is very popular among kids and it would be a great way to stimulate students' interest for Maths. It is really useful for problem solving and for teaching area and perimeter. My 8/9 year old students love Minecraft and in fact I am attending a day seminar in November how it can be applied to Maths. I would use it for 3d shapes and solving problems.

I am not familiar with Minecraft but looking some of the lessons it seems like a very interesting way to teach some math concepts. I think that is a useful tool because I know that kids really enjoy it and if they are going to spend time playing with it, better if they learn something in the way.

I know that Minecraft is a popular pc game but I have never used it in my math class. I think it is used primarily to teach coding or programming. I find the concept—to combine a digital 3D game with maths, very tempting (though it’s not something new to take advantage of a game to teach math)— but we must always be cautious when we are blending a recreational activity with an abstract subject (an analogue would be to use literature to teach reading or grammar). However, math is everywhere and therefore we are somehow obliged to discover new pedagogical answers to old challenges like which is the optimal way to engage and motivate our students.

My kids are big fans of Minecraft, they love it. I think this is a good example of a resource that motivates students. Using Minecraft to teach math can capture the interest of our students and engage them in math.
This game allows to construct some Polyhedrons and work the scales, the proportions, volumes and area very easily.

We have some teachers at our school who have done some teaching through minecraft however the problem with it for me is that I feel I need to be way more confident and comfortable with using it than I am and then it makes it challenging to use well.

I don't know Minecraft and I never thought of using it as a teaching tool. However, I think it is an excellent idea to attract all students, even those with the greatest difficulty in studying geometry. From this point of view, I believe that its use in the classroom can be inclusive, even for pupils with learning difficulties, who would enjoy learning. It's also true that if the activity is not well thought out and organized it could be a moment of distraction and play for students.

I think a teacher has to be very much into it to be able to teach by Minecraft. So if the teacher really likes Minecraft and plays it with enthusiasm, then why not. I 've tried to play but it didn't occupy my interest to continue. It takes a lot of time that I don't have personally. But I think that if children play Minecraft at home they can benefit from it in a wide range. And than a teacher who does play Minecraft can refer to it at some point when teaching volume, measures etc.

I do not know Minecraft but, watching the video, I think it can be used in a classroom in so many disciplinary ambitions, from art to math, to promote creativity and collaboration among students. There is a risk that it will be reduced to a simple moment of distraction for students if used incorrectly. However, I read on the web that the teacher has access to a shared library that collects lessons and activities from other users on the Minecraft platform. The teacher can consult it, modify it and adapt it to her class as well as, for example, , modify the game options to suit students' educational needs.

My students really love Minecraft and they talk about it very often. I never use it in my lessons because we haven't a computer or a IWB in class. The learning design I'm thinking about is to create a zoo cage. Maybe my students could design that with Minecraft in the school's computer room.

The problem with minecarft is that there is no wifi that works well. I love the resource, in addition I have a small child who had a channel and explained to other children how to optimize the game. He did it intuitively. They are very good resources

I have some doubts about the fact that it is used in class, I think that most of the students will consider the activity as a game and do not relate to mathematics. But there is nothing like experimenting. Students can surprise us.

I totally agree with Ana M. In my opinion the risk of using technology as an objective instead of a way to learn, is very great using this king of videogames. Few years ago a student (11 year) in my class was so into minecraft he just talked about it, and it had several problems in socializing...moreover, I think manipulating instead of watching a video is more useful for didactical purposes.
