On August 11, 1975, the UDT staged a coup. For three weeks, civil war raged throughout East Timor, as forces of the UDT battled with a quickly formed armed wing of FRETILIN, called FALINTIL.
Nine days later, on December 7, 1975, Indonesian military forces responded by invading the newly proclaimed republic. In the first few days of the invasion, 2,000 citizens of the capital, Dili, were killed, and a systematic campaign of human rights abuses followed. This is when the art started to be created

Also the people were displaced out of their homes which is a deprivation of their home and their living conditions. There was mass murders and there was also people dying from starvation. People were forbidden to embrace and encourage the culture. People were killed for this. They violated human rights, raped them, executed and torture the people. Most of the these were civilians killed or defeated by the military or starved to death in internment camps or while hiding in the hills from the Indonesian military. Small groups of East Timorese continued their resistance for decades. The people were torture and starved to death. This was almost exactly to what was happening during the HOLOCAUST.
