When she turned ten, she and her family including 4 siblings moved from Poland to Belgium. When the Zimetbuam family moved to Belgium they ended up settling in Antwerp. Even though she was an extremely smart girl, she and her siblings had to be pulled out of school because of her parent's financial situation. As her sentence was read, Mala was able to have a sharp object on her how and she ended up sliting her wrists and slapping SS man Ruitters, who attempted to stop her. She slit her wrists hoping no one would stop the bleeding and she would die right there instead of dying by public execution. She was taken to the camp hospital to stop the bleeding. According to some eyewitness accounts, she died on the way to the crematorium.
